I was replying to Kricke87 which was the post before mine..in his post he suggested that 20,000 per month was too much and I think it is fair . ..Of course, 10,000 per week is too much ,I pay exactly half that but for more hours.
If you would have read my post more carefully you might have had a more intelligent answer.
No 20000 pesos is not TOO much per month to pay someone for fulltime work, but paying 20000 pesos for basically 25% of fulltime work, is too much for that profession in THIS country.

El Hijo de Manolo

It's outrageous, egregious, preposterous!

Could some of you share what you pay your gardener?

I have had several over the years. Most were Haitians who were good workers but knew nothing about gardening. They needed constant direction. I need to go to work and cannot be home to give it to them.

Now I have a decent gardener who also cleans the pool once or twice a week. He works 3 mornings a week, supposedly from 8:30- noon.

When he started I asked him what pay he needed. He said 10,000, which is what I paid the others. Apparently, he meant not 10,000 a month, but 10,000 every two weeks!!!!

I tell him that is too much. He says that is what others pay him. I said they must be newly arrived ex-pats who don't know better. I told him that I would check what others are paying and get back to him.

So what do you pay a gardener?
Too much. A good gardner would maybe make 20k at the most full time in a non resort hotel. You have college grads taking assistant accounting jobs for 30k . Anytime you get a number it's always by month here. I've never been quoted in semi monthly payments. This is a typical gringo hit and spin. If it's a private home you are not required to pay more than 10k per month 5.5 days/week under the new laws for domestic help. You're not a hotel or a business. If you value someone, then it's up to you! But then you almost 100% of the time will see "when you give a mouse a cookie, they'll want a glass of milk'

Love all the replies. I tend to agree with this one. And with Bob- will negotiate. But Hijo de Manolo- you take the prize for your last sentence! And I bet few on his board will understand you were quoting the wisdom of a children's book!

Hopefully to make things a little easier ? I pay my Gardner 100pesos an hour. He works 4hours a day 3 days a week from 8am-12.
The property I have doesn't warrant full time employment.
He gets a meal and drink which can take anything from 15 - 30 minutes depending if he came put his telephone down for 5 minutes !!
He's been with me for 10 years or more , so a little give and take. He sometimes gets some additional work if there is some maintenance work, etc., to be done.

Payment has mainly to do with where you live.
I can imagine living in villages in the south, Baní, Barahona etc you het people working for less money than SD, Santiago or the tourist aereas.
