Generator purchase and installation

We are thinking of buying a generator, possibly around 15KW.

Does anyone have a recommendation of where we might buy one and who to use for the installation and maintenance?

We live in Sabaneta de Yasica so ideally we would find someone between Gaspar Hernandez and Sosua, but would also consider companies based further away such as in Santiago.

Does anyone have any experience with Freddy Multiservice, good or bad?

Thank you for your help.

I was introduced to a guy called Carmelo by the owner of Alexis Inverters in Gasper Hernandez. He worked miracles with my old Yamaha diesel generator and, when I thought it was fit only for the dump, he replaced and repaired it so it now runs smoothly again when needed. He charged me a very reasonable rate and guaranteed his work. He also had the ability to acquire new or used generators via his contacts but I was not in the market for that at the time. He also specialises in air conditioning units. I would definitely recommend his work and he is in Gaspar Hernandez too. PM me for his telephone number if interested.

We purchased a 10K propane/natural gas genset at PriceSmart in Santiago last year. Price was 100,000 pesos. Our installer lives in Puerto Plata. PM if you want his number. The unit comes with an automatic switch-over panel which I had installed as my main breaker panel in place of the original. Installation was straighforward except that I wanted my first 'fall-back' to be my 8 battery invertor. The installer made a manual switch-over so that whenever I want to run the generator, all I have to do is flip a toggle switch next to the supplied breaker panel. This kicks in the generator (220V) and turns of the invertor (110V).

Thank you to everyone for their advice and recommendations. We need to think a little more about exactly what we want and then start looking around.

No matter what you do, make sure that the repairman is local.

My generator came from Sto Domingo and when I called for service, not only did I pay for travel it took days for him to appear.
Now that I am out of warranty, I use locals. Easier and cheaper.

Adrian, Most Generator of that size (15KW) are three phase and houses here are wired for TWO phase. You have to use a 15KW Three phase genrator to get about 10KW out of it on TWO phases. The third phase is unused.
Bear this in mind !

I have had best success using two mechanics for generator service; one local and one from Santo Domingo.

I use a local guy for small easy fixes and someone who really knows what he is doing from Santo Domingo.

The best mechanics are in the big cities, since that is where money is to be made (Santo Domingo). This is also generally true of other professionals such as doctors, engineers, etc. Also, all parts can be found in Santo Domingo since that is where the major distributors are located.

Olly,

Thanks, that is very helpful to know. Usually it is the sort of thing one finds out AFTER the installation.

coastlineconstruction,

Thanks for the advice. We do have a local guy for small things, but was planning to have the installation and maybe some maintenance done by a specialist.

That was exactly my issue.
The circuit board was acting up and only SDQ had the parts and expertise.

Simple things like oil changes, etc, we do ourselves

Solar Panels

We need to think a little more about exactly what we want and then start looking around.

We decided to get away from diesel fuel.
In August we'll have a 12-panel solar plant installed. With the high cost of fuel, oil and me doing all the maintenance I thought it's time for a change. The investment is supposed to pay itself off in about 3 years.

Of course, we shall keep our 16kW genset, just in case the sun does not rise any more.... :cross-eye
Our standby Kubota 6.5kW, however, we'll probably sell.
