I will be staying with a Dominican family in Santiago for a month and would like to bring an appropriate gift from the U.S. to show my appreciation. Any suggestions?

Johnny Walker Black for the Host, Bailey's, chocolates and cosmetics for the Hostess, and school supplies/toys for the kids. Baseball hats are always a hit for all.

A month is a very long time to be a guest, it's hard to recommend something without knowing something about the people you're staying with. Ages? Number of people in the family? Are you related to them?

Flip Ultra - Shoot Anything. Share Everything

I don't know how much you want to spend but the Flip Video cam..($149.00 plus shipping....It's even cheaper at Radio Shack, if you are near one) would be an awesome gift!!.....they would not forget you, if you brought them that, it has a hookup for TV....and of course the handy USB flip out adapter that plugs into your USB port ....(don't know if they have a computer).....but it is super simple to use....everyone would have a blast with it, it would be something the whole family would get a kick out of...........I have done this before, and it was a huge hit............I also have one, and I love it........:cheeky::cheeky:

As a house guest, particularly for an extended period as in your case, it would also be the correct thing to do to contribute to the purchase of groceries, or pick up "treats" on the odd day (perhaps something from the bakery or a nice bottle of wine, if they are wine drinkers).

I would do the above in addition to bringing along a gift from the US.

Thanks for all the suggestions. To clarify - I will be staying with a family as part of a Spanish language immersion program and I haven't met them but will find out if they have children. I will definitely bring things for the children if it is a family with children. In the same situation in the US, I would generally take a picture frame or nice household item like a candle or something for the kitchen. Not sure if any of those ideas would be appropriate here - sounds like consumables may be better.

School supplies are the best thing if they have children. If they are very poor and in the process of expanding their house (many people build block by block) but them cement and/or blocks and/or rebar.

After you arrive in Santiago Airport you can buy 5 liters of booze very cheap. - example $18 per liter of Absolut (many flavors)

Sorry to go against the grain a little here but I think if you can find something that is difficult to get here, or extremely over priced here (which is most things) then I'm sure theywould appreciate it. Something a little different will always go down well.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that this will be at least a middle class family, I can't imagine a program sending 'students' to a hovel. If you live near a Bath & Body Works store, I can guarantee that the wife will love a little gift set of Shower Gel and Body Lotion [go for one of the light vanilla fragrances, or the coconut/lemon]. Stick to that brand, it's very much appreciated in DR. For the husband, someone suggested Johnny Walker Black - good choice. You can pick that up at the duty-free before you fly.

An HD TV that thing cost an eye of the face in DR. here in US it's 1/3 of the price.
I'll take this like a present next time to DR. (for my Mom).
