L 87/6.2-liter engine / GM Powered Solutions

There are many GMC Sierras and Chevrolet Suburbans and Tahoes and several Cadillac Escalades in circulation in the Dominican Republic.

Take note that the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a recall on 24 April 2025, for all General Motors vehicles with the L 87/6.2-liter engine, for model years 2021-2024. This recall (N252494001 and following) is for Cadillac, GMC and Chevrolet vehicles with this engine. The recall has been made in three phases: first, for dealers, then for owners within the warranty period, and lastly for all vehicle owners.

This issue is serious. The L87 6.2L engine has a major flaw. The crankshaft is not at the correct tolerance, and the rod bearings tend to disintegrate, and the engines destroy themselves, leaving drivers stranded or worse. To appreciate...

This is beyond stupid for GM. How long have they been making V8 engines? Where are their QC engineers.

These are the engines that came out of the St Catharine, Ontario plant. So you need to check your Vin # against the list on the NHTSA website. Not all are affected.

If your lucky your engine may have come from the Tonawanda, NY plant. This plant is currently working to build thousands of replacement L87 long blocks for warranty recalls. Also GM is saying owners must use Mobil 1 synthetic oil.

This is similar to Kia/Hyundai problem with 4.1 million of their 2.0 & 2.4 Theta ll GDI 4-cylinder engines built between 2011 to 2014 primarily built in Alabama but also elsewhere.

These type of wide scale recalls and failures can damage a companies reputation for decades.

All manufacturers have been making smaller GDI engines for fuel economy but now many people are demanding a return to port injection or a combination of GDI/Port injection like Toyota's Highlander. Carbon buildup is prematurely damaging valve life and even breaking free and scoring piston walls and damaging rings. There are places springing up across the US to do walnut shell blasting of carbon off intake valves for about $600 on GDI engines. If your handy and have the equipment this can be a DYI project.

Someone could be the first to do this in the DR and make a mint. Two guys could do 4 per day. The walnut shell media costs about $50 per car and you need an high volume air compressor and high suction shop vac with some modified rubber intake cover fitments.

I stopped buying American "union made" junk in the 1980's, it's been Datsun/Nissans and Hyundais for me since; although I prefer ones made in Japan or South Korea, I will purchase an American made one since the parts are imported and the workers are non-union

Datsun became Nissan in early 80s.Nissan has been American made since 1983 and many models of Kia /Hyundai since 2009.
They are non-union plants.
Check the inside door sticker on your cars it will tell you where it's made

I heard they were having problems. It looks like they made it official. I just checked my VIN, and they are showing a recall on the motor. No solution yet. The engine factory must be working overtime.
I love their terminology;
Product Safety Recall
L87 Engine Loss of Propulsion
Released: 2025-05-06
