Mr. Meterman. Your are visiting an independent, sovereign country with it's own government body and laws. What ever gave the idea that you could even think of doing this?

They don't and they won't.

Unless you are an INS agent, Marshall, FBI agent of police officer on official business you will never get on the plane with a weapon.

Fabio Guzman

He is the legal expert on these types of posts. I am sure he will view your posts and respond to you. However, I will tell you here and now that unless you are on official business you will not enter this country with a hand gun.

There is a way in which you can obtain a firearm legally in the Dominican Republic. That is to first become a legal resident in the Dominican Republic then go through the processes of obtaining a firearm. You have a long, long way to go. There are ex pats here that do have legal residency and also legally carry firearms. Then there are others such as myself that simply leave all of that gun stuff to my Dominican military officer friends. Ask Fabio about what is needed to become a legal resident. Then this idea you have of carrying a firearm in the DR becomes less insane.

I am not trying to give you a hard time. I am trying to enlighten you on an otherwise obviously rhetorical answer. You cannot legally bring firearms into the Dominican Republic unless it is under official business with law enforcement with full consent by the Dominican government.

Ok, now let's say that you (somehow and only God knows why) got your hands on a handgun and then shot someone to death while "protecting" yourself. If you weren't also shot and killed what do you think is going to legally happen to you? You are going to go to a Dominican jail (which is full of hardcore Dominican criminals that don't give a crap that you are an American) Cripes, if you killed a Dominican what is going to happen to you? Do you think the US Embassy will protect you? You think that movie Midnight Express was bad? Man oh man you haven't seen anything yet.

From how you are writing I gather that you are law enforcement? If you are I will inform you that I am also since 1982. If you are law enforcement then common sense would surely overcome your bizarre interest in carrying a handgun in another country. Lastly, what compells you to want to protect yourself in a foreign country? I mean, you are not entering a warzone, unless you know something that we don't. Come down here to enjoy yourself and relax, get a cold drink and a hot babe. Relax and enjoy! Dominicans are lovers!

Think of it this way. Would the US allow a Dominican citizen, who has all the legal permits required in DR to carry a concealed handgun, to bring that handgun and carry it in this country? I mean, most states within the US do not even allow residents from other states within the country to do that, so what makes you think that a totally different country would?

All that is missing here I think my friend HM is a great deal of common sense. I mean who the heck would want to do something like this anyway? Well, that is an interesting question. I know of fellow officers that wrap their handguns in a plastic bag and bring that thing into the shower with them. Perhaps our new guest here is along these lines? Go figure...

When I was in college there was a strange fellow in ROTC who was heard to comment "I'd rather sleep with my M-1 than with a girl."

I've often wondered if he was fragged by his own men in Vietnam.

Dear meterman: You will be jailed upon entry if you try to enter the Dominican Republic with a weapon in your luggage.
All luggage is x-rayed upon entry and much of is is x-rayed in the US before leaving, so you have an excellent chance of being taken off the flight efore you even get here.

forget the weapon.

What I think they are trying to say is: Their is no reciprocity with US Police departments or State Permit holders of CCW's, I don't know about Federal Agents, that is something you would want your agency (IF you are a Federal Officer) to ascertain with Dominican Officials

Obviously US Air Marshals carry weapons in the Dominican Republic, as well as any country they may lay over in. I don't know the restrictions on where they may go with them, but generally it is better if the agent (Air Marshall) carries the weapon wherever he goes, rather than leaving it locked in an unfamiliar area.

Anyone who can legally posses a firearm may transport it in checked luggage on any US Carrier, as long is it is in an approved locked case and declared upon checking. Entering the DR with it is a different issue.

No need for all the rhetoric, he asked a valid question. I once was somewhat consumed if my authority to carry would be approved in The District of Columbia due to their strict laws, it was in 1999, sine 9/11 it is no longer valid

I also had an incident as a LEO when my car was stopped by four foot patrolman in NYC for crossing three lanes of traffic, after looking at my license and ID they asked if I was carrying. Knowing the the NYC Sullivan Law is very restrictive, I asked politely "should I be" their polite but maybe not quite "legal" reply "The more good guys carrying guns here, the happier we are" and I went on my way with their business cards.

If you are a Private citizen, I believe a resounding no is the answer

Meterman, I think you may need to post more details to get an accurate answer

I am Canadian, but I have many friends in the USA...I believe it is the right of every American citizen to "bear arms" (carry a concealed weapon). It is probably very natural for MM to have a gun in his pocket at the grocery store, the bank, while he drives to work...I''m assuming he is just wondering if it is the same way in the DR?

Myself, I would not want to live in a place where I felt I had to have a gun on me everywhere I go...or vacation to a place where I felt unsafe either...but seeing how Americans are with their guns, I understand what he was thinking when he asked the question.

The right is the 2nd amendment, but, to carry concealed requires a license in each state, just because you can carry in Texas does not mean that u can carry in NY. The op should have known better.
And you CocoLuva need to quit making assumptions, on something you know nothing about and possiblibly you US friends also need to learn .
And no way he carries into the bank in any state unless he is a cop, bankguard, brinks etc.

If you are a legal Dominican citizen, and OWN a house or an apartment, you can own a firearm and carry certain firearms, with a permit. As a foreigner, you have NO right to carry a firearm in DR. If you try to bring one in, you won't make it out of the airport. You can't even wear military fatigues in DR. I too carry a firearm here in the United States. I travel to DR frequently and am planning on relocating there in the future. When I do, I want to bring my firearms there. However, like the other gentleman stated, it is a LONG and difficult process (much like getting a NYC pistol permit) and you MUST be a Dominican citizen AND a home owner. Guns are VERY expensive there. But again, unless you plan on going into a REALLY bad area or wearing a lot of expensive jewelry in public, you really don't need a gun. I am Dominican and Italian and have never had a problem in any of my visits and I have been to many areas that tourists should NOT be going into alone. Like the man said, grab a cold Presidente and a "mujer" and have a good time!

Mirage and cammo clothing...

An hour ago you were asking us about gun ownership..Now you are giving out answers.....AND YOU ARE WRONG ABOUT MILITARY CLOTHING !! I own property here and wear them alot and the Dominican Military I meet at checkpoints don't say anything...You are confused with another country such as COLOMBIA where you CAN'T wear military clothing....I would not recommend it in the Capital...But most rural areas even the chicas have a tight fitting pair of cammos on every now and then........You can find cammo clothes in alot of shops in the DR....You have been mis-informed...Or your taking shots in the dark with your comments...Please stick to facts as alot of people read this forum.....

Seriously, no disrespect to you. However, this OP's question was whether he could bring a deadly weapon into a foreign country NOT another state. It wasn't a valid question it was a ridiculous question. Sorry, I am around guns all day everyday and it isn't any big deal. However, when people wish to bring handguns to a foreign country when they should be stocking up on the suntan lotion we must question this.

It might be rhetoric but without rhetoric would there be message boards? Something to ponder.
