I've heard good things about the regular menu from friends who go often, and have been myself to the Thursday BBQ...which was very good, if not very "German".

I have only had good meals at Old Germany.

Tres Cocos (aka Mickey's) near Cofresi also has great German and intl food.I consider it the best restaurant in the POP area. Very cozy and good atmosphere.

Also a little place, very informal, called Tiroler Stuberl is on the corner just before the entrance of Cofresi, on the other side of the road. There they have authentic Austrian food, which is basically like Bavarian (south German) food. This place is very small and cheap looking, but the food is great.

I have only looked at the menu, while I was waiting for someone, and the food offered was a nice variety, with very decent prices. The food of the people eating there at the time looked very appetizing.

We have been planning to go and try it out, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

sounds good. we wanted to try something new, and because i have infected miesposo with german sausage love bug good old germany sounded tempting :)
we have tried their products already (jose luis sells them).
and it seems like a kinky choice for a fifth wedding anniversary meal, right?

i am so not romantic :)

To be honest with you this place used to have great food, I was there recently and was not to pleased with the current meals, I would suggest the restaurant Orquidee in Sosua or bayrischerhof in caberete opposite ocean one plaza down the side street for the best German food on north coast.

I tried it last month and I liked it. Good tasting food and a lot of it. It was pretty crowded when I was there.

Here's a bit of advice Bob - and this comes from having worked in the catering industry -

AVOID BUFFETS LIKE THE PLAGUE....LITERALLY!!

they are never a good idea for the customer

This is not a traditional buffet...all hot food is served directly off the grill...there are about a half dozen salads and cold side dishes served somewhat buffet style.

I've only been once, a few weeks ago, and heard someone different started running it a few months ago (the former owner of Black Box on the beach), so maybe the BBQ I had was different than Bob's I can't imagine anyone eating what I ate and considering it the worst meal they'd had in 7 years...but food is very subjective...

All I know is I'm going back tomorrow!

I will bet you a meal that if you go to Orquidee rest in Sosua or the baysherhause in Caberette you will never again eat in this place, It used to be great food a few years back but I believe there is new managment.

It was with the new owners and the food was so salty you could not eat it. The saussage however was ok

I'll take that meal BP!!

I have eaten in both...many times. Orchidee is pretty good, but their menu is limited...Bayerischer Hof is one of my favorite restaurants on the NC, I've recommended it on DR1 several times, but neither has an all-you-can eat BBQ for 350 pesos.

I appreciate Bob's opinion and in no way doubt that he had a bad meal there, but when I went I didn't find the food salty at all (and I cook with very little salt and never add it to my food). I also wouldn't recommend it just because it was 350 pesos, but because everything I had was genuinely good...

We tried it tonight. Certainly not gourmet dining - but hey - it's $350 RD. Ribs were VERY salty, but the chicken and shishkebab and sausage were fine. And as someone else said - this BBQ night is not typical German cuisine. I lived for 30 years in Kitchener/Waterloo Ontario - which is a huge German community. That's food that really SCHMECKS. Rolled ribs and kraut to die for. Schnitzels, sausage on a bun at the market. Deli liverwurst from Fiedlers. So I know a thing or two about German ( or perhaps more appropriately Mennonite) food.

I will say that we used to eat there occasionally, when it was run by previous owner. And enjoyed the somewhat more traditional German items on the menu. Will maybe give that a try soon.

we went too. the food was decent: a choice of four of five salads and some meat (chuletas, chicken, sausages and pork or chicken pinchos). the place was full to the brim and many people were coming back for the second or third serving.
we did not eat too much, i barely finished my plate and miesposo had a second helping of spicy sausage. we had a chance to chat briefly with one of the owners, a very nice guy.
and some german dude sitting at the table nearby spent entire evening staring at my chest  :squareeye

it is not worth a drive from POP but if you are in sosua already and you like meat, go and dig in :) few places in DR will offer you all you can eat buffet for less than 10 dollars...
