Government presents new strategy to reduce traffic congestion

On Tuesday, 17 June 2025, the government announced more than 100 new measures to improve traffic in Greater Santo Domingo. Described as a sweeping traffic overhaul for Greater Santo Domingo, the comprehensive traffic management strategy was unveiled by Minister of the Presidency Jose Ignacio Paliza, who is also the director of the Transport Cabinet for the Abinader administration. He said the initiative follows a rigorous technical process that included data collection at over 120 intersections, the analysis of more than 220 hours of video footage, origin-destination surveys at over 3,000 points, and extensive micro and macro traffic simulations.

More than 60% to 70% of morning commutes in Santo Domingo are attributed to work and study, according to Alexandra Cedeño Villegas, director of Urban Mobility at the National Institute of Ground Transit and Transport...

"The new strategy did not include announcements of what will be done with the millions of motorcyclists that are in circulation, most with blatant disregard of local traffic laws. Earlier, the government has focused on the need to establish new measures to ensure motorcyclists use adequate helmets for their safety."

Ignoring the biggest white elephant in the room among all this talk? Laughable 😅

Interestingly enough, it appears they are holding a these meetings without the attendance of any of the country's transportation union presidents
like Mr. Juan Hubieres of Fenatrano.

In London they introduced a tax that you have to pay to drive in the center during peak hours. You pay daily. Traffic volumes reduced by a huge amount as a result and all the money raised was spent on new pubic transport. I honestly think unless they crack public transport they aren't going to reduce traffic volumes

Also you could reduce traffic volume by half by; last number on plate is even drives today, uneven tomorrow and so on.

Indeed the poor people of London are now being taxed to drive on the same streets their government
has been taxing them to maintain for generations. I'll never understand why Brits are so gullible?
Without fail it only took a few years for the libs to drag this "idea" across the pond to NYC which has
implemented a similar plan for their sheep as well.

Luis has been very clever with taking on the transportation unions. Rather than go for the jugular when
they were still at their height in power just before Covid/ around the time he took office, he has decided
to wait and slowly weaken them first, so not to risk any major disruptions or bloodshed during the process
of elimination.

The only time the motos bother me is when they drive on the sidewalk. Most if not all motos are faster than me so they don't hurt anything. I know a lot of people detest them but I'm not one of them.

I love cars and I'm no happier about being taxed than the next person, but I must say that from what I have seen and what I hear the "Congestion Charge" in London has been quite popular with Londoners. When it was first introduced there was a lot of reaction against it but the people have in general have come to accept and even welcome it. Without all the congestion that there used to be life in the streets is much easier and (I will get slaughtered for saying this here) the air quality is noticeably better. People I know have got rid of their cars and don't have all the problems with parking that they used to have. They have become accustomed to using public transport or even walking!

Having said that, as MariaRubia said, the public transport system in Santo Domingo is nowhere near as good as London's yet, so it may be many years before a car charging system could be introduced there.

The last time I owned a vehicle Bill Clinton was President and Michael Jordan had just won his 6th championship with the Chicago Bulls.
The last time l lived in Santo Domingo Barack Obama was President and Steph Curry had just won his 1st championship with Golden State.
Having a difference of opinion with others was soooo much easier back then.

They already tried that. Remember the green/yellow roofs?

Thats for public motoconchos and it is still in use and working just fine.
But this is about a fee they have to pay per day for a certain route.
They can pay for both, therefor you see a lot of conchos with yellow and green roofs that are allowed to drive every day.
You can apply the same for all cars using the last number of the plate.
Extremely easy to enforce and even the biggest idiot would figure it out when he can or can't drive.

For the ones that don't know, this is the port where about 90 % of all car imports arrive.
Almost every Day at least one ship loaded with new and used Cars is unloaded.
Everywhere people will by a lot of Cars when the economy is doing well, that's normal.
What's not normal is that the old cars never leave the road here.
I think in max 1-2 years SD Traffic will come to a complete hold, what will lead to total chaos,
riots and even worse.
