Thank you so much for your congratulations and good wishes.

I have been writing for years about how Dominican lawyers should avoid pomposity and legalese, and write plain and precise Spanish prose that people and judges would understand. I have been called a dreamer, a grade-school teacher (?un maestrico?) and other things I dare not mention in polite company. My election to the Academy is a welcome change.

Does the academy have enforcing authority? Because I would like you to go around clubbing these people on the head on account of the same offense: journalists, politicians and some of our writers.

People tend to confuse pomposity with literacy. "If you can't dazzle them with your brilliance..."
