I love it. Kids are walking around selling it in my neighborhood. 40 pesos + a 10 peso tip. I ate some yesterday and it was delicious.

I think they should make it with black beans.

It's sweetened with sugar (lots) and evaporated milk so I'm guessing worst case would be a little more sugar.

I’ve never seen black beans but I don’t see why not. In Palenque, there are a couple of ladies that make it with Habas (Lima beans I think).

Mr AE’s Tia Ramona made the best habichuelas con dulce ever, no one else came close (which used to annoy my mother-in-law/her sister). We drove to Ensanche Ozama every year just to eat some. She must have had a secret ingredient 😋

Which crazy lady? Dominican? In one of the food stands over to the left?

Hang on Gordon. I'm really not a fan of the melting pot of overcooked beans, amorphously chopped batata, carnation milk, Rica listamilk and famosa Leche de coco all thrown together at once and blast furnace boiled; however black beans would never meet the flavor profile. Why don't you just add cilantro and oregano too!

A am like the unnamed man in "Green Eggs and Ham" the book by Dr. Seuss
I do not like green eggs and ham.

I just don't like the idea of sweet beans.
In my world some things simply should not have sugar added enough to make it sweet.
But I have to admit...I have never tasted them.
Like I said...I just don't like the idea.

But maybe I would be like the unnamed man in "Green Eggs and Ham".
I just don't have anyone like Sam-I-am to insist on having me try them.

It’s a dessert. Do you eat rice pudding? I wonder who first thought “Let’s make a sweet dessert out of rice/beans”?

It’s a dessert.
Wow...and all this time I thought it was a side dish to the main course.
How about that?

Mother made if for me as a kid.
Never though anything about it.

Habichuelas con dulce is a learned taste. If you didn't grow up eating it, chances are high you will not like it. There are always exceptions, but...

My first time eating it (25years ago) I was on vacation in Santo Domingo. 3rd time in the counrty. Alone. No clue. Walking around some poorer areas. In my little shorts and fanny pack. Very limited Spanish. Passed a big group of people in the street eating. I asked what that was. The lady gave me a bowl of ( as I described it to people later) thick brown stuff with bean pieces and potatoes. It was warm and way too sweet with mushy vanilla waffers floating on top. I ate it all not wanting to be rude. They filled my bowl again and I had to eat more. By the second bowl I had enough. Not bad flavor but sickening sweet. I bought a few beers for the group. Tried to communicate with my little book. Then one of the men said he would walk me to a safer area and that was it. My sweet beans experience.

I can eat a little now. Not a favorite but when a neighbor gives me some I smile, say thank you so much and eat with a big smile while making yummy sounds.
