Happy birthday, DR1. I, too, was a johnny-come-lately, who might have saved himself years of wasted time, and thousands of dollars, had I been privy to dominican culture prior to 2008.
My advice to all you noobs, learn from the sage forum members who've been there, and taken the scars so that you don't have to.

I joined the forums in 2002, just about the time when I was emerging from the worst stage of culture shock. I first remember reading the daily news in 1998 after Hurricane Georges. I also remember the SD News from my very first visit in 1996.
