I am 68 and will be moving to the DR in the fall. I am looking for some form of health insurance with (very important) some form of prescription drug plan. I know it's tough and or expensive at my age. Anyone have any ideas?

The government health insurance plan. Don't count on drug coverage.

Prescription drug coverage here is expensive. It costs almost as much as the drugs themselves and there's usually a limit on how much is covered. Drugs that have a generic version are much cheaper here than in the US.

Totally agree with Cavok's post. I'm your (hamster's) age and spend about 50USD a month on meds, including ibuprofenia, metformina, atovostatina, and levothyroxined. I go to Amadita every 6 months to get blood/urine work, which is another 125 USD. I have no Dominican insurance and no plan to get any.

The one time I went to a doc recommended by JD it was 3000 DOP for the first visit and 1500 DOP for the follow up. He ordered an MRI which was around $225.

I'm on medicare and if I truly need to go back to the USA for invasive surgery then I would do it if I have to.

I also don't eat spinach anymore.

Thanks JD, I went on the website but nowhere does it say how much the plan costs. Maybe one has to apply first?

You can get health insurance from us with Mapfre if you are under 70 years old. This plan has much higher coverage than Senasa . In my opinion Senasa's limits are not enough to cover a serious medical issue. You can get outpatient medicine as well with it. The cost for a decent plan from Mapfre is about 3300 pesos a month.

Best option for you could be;
(Only works if you have a friend with an oficial company).
He can "employ" you and pay your tss, than you can update your healkth plan with any private insurance company (every decent accountant knows how to do this). Reimburse your friend his actual monthly costs and enjoy a company backed insurance. It's a WIN WIN !, He can deduct a salary for you from his taxable income and you have a great health plan.

Putting aside the obvious ethical issues of cheating the dominican health care system, for this you would need a cedula or work permit to be eligible , as we as be prepared for questions determining the nature of your work" when you are admittted into the hospital

Thank you Drperson. How do I het more information on the Mapfre plan you mention? I went on a Mapfre website and they only mention 2 plans, an international plan and a catastrophic illness plan, both very expensive.
