You do not have to overpay $$$ for unneeded dual-WAN and wireless N. Such speeds do not exist in this country. Why to waste the money then? In 50+ years - may be. Now a free Claro modem will do same job.

Free Claro modem is not "made" for unstable, noisy, and long lines.

just some excerpts:
http://www.increasebroadbandspeed.co.uk/billion-7800n

The most brilliant feature of the Billion 7800N is its ability to tweak the target SNR margin, which is described in detail on our Broadband SNR margin tweaking page. A great feature of the 7800N’s target SNR margin adjustment capability is that any changes made survive a modem reboot.

As detailed in our Increase Broadband Speed Guide, all lines are unique and it is not always possible to reliably predict which modulation method – basic ADSL (G.Dmt) , ADSL2 or ADSL2+ – will yield the very best speeds and line stability. When the 7800N is left in its default setting, the modulation method is selected automatically. However, manual selection can potentially improve the speeds and stability.

Using a chipset from Broadcom, the Billion 7800N benefits from a new impulse noise protection technology. According to Broadcom, its PhyR (pronounced “Fire”) technology delivers a ten-fold improvement in noise resilience against impulse noise and delivers a reduction in bit error rates. This feature was only made available in the firmware from 1.06b, and is not switched on by default.

You CANNOT do THAT on cheap Claro DSL modem.

What speeds we are talking here? :)
There is no miracle device to solve problems with bad lines, etc. It is just an advertisement / PR article.

Just type this in Google - "Billion 7800N problems".

Besides, when a lightning strikes into a phone line, it damages $300 "Billion 7800N" as easily as free Claro modems.

This thread is 3 years old but the problems with Claro internet dropping seem to continue.  In the 3 years, the speeds offered have increased (and prices have decreased).  Based on this thread, someone who is having problems with their internet dropping, may try getting a lower speed and find it to be more consistent.

My question is - It's been 3 years.  What speed is most consistent now?  I'm trying to get 10 mbps and finding it drops a lot. Has anyone found an internet speed in which the line does not drop a lot?  It may depend on the location.  I am in Jarabacoa.

Also want to say, thanks for the information here.  I'm not a techy but it's helpful to read and provided me with some ideas for getting more reliable internet.  Thanks.

It does depend on your location and the condition of the lines.

According to them DSL of 15 was supposed to be available to me.
They tried to give me DSL of 15 but had to drop it to DSL of 10.

I am using Claro ADSL, and my place is located quite far from the "cabina". I once upgraded my plan to 10MB/s download speed, but that made my internet slightly intermittent. All local Claro technicians agreed that I had to stick to the 5MB/s plan. Indeed it has been years now, and my line is very stable. But I wish I could enjoy faster speed.

Maybe one day we'll get fiber?

By the way, I am using the free Claro modem/router: Huawei HG532e

I'd happily buy any other modem/router if it would allow me to upgrade my download speed to at least 10MB/s

(Suggestions welcome! ;) )

Nothing I know of can improve the speed from the provider.

I agree, but this is not what I meant. I mean that I would gladly contract higher speeds from Claro if I knew of a modem/router that would keep it stable.

My actual modem is stable at 5MB/s. This is about stability, in the sense of internet not dropping intermittently.

So far, I am better off with a 5MB/s line than a 10MB/s line. But I have not (yet) experimented with a different modem/router, hence my question.

Connect your old router and check the configuration, all routers use same information, take pictures of the screens and the go to your new one router and copy the information, where appears Claro and under asking for a password its claro the password.
