Hi Guys

I'm looking for opinions on a couple of Hotels please.

I booked my parents (both around 80) into the Barcelo Lina after I checked their website and it looked great - my sister then checked out Trip Advisor. And the reviews were terrible. From dirty and stained bed linen to pros' in the lobby.

She then said the Courtyard by Marriott had great reviews, which it has. What I need to know is do any of you guys know these 2 hotels and can you give some guidence please. Or any other suggestions of good hotels near these 2.

Regards,
Paul

Ive stayed at both and I would choose the Marriott over the Lina hands down. Although I read similar reviews about the Lina and it was not nearly as bad as the reviews made it seem, which is almost always the case with sites like Trip Advisor. They are both on Av. Maximo Gomez, about 10 blocks apart.

Another great choice, fairly close to these two, but a little out of the way is the Occidental Embajador. If you ask nicely, they may upgrade you to the Executive (Club El Embajador) floor....it is really nice and has great complimentary food, drinks, services, and staff. The only other mainstream hotel in the city center that I know of is the Clarion. I haven't stayed there, but have heard positive comments about it and it's reasonably priced.

Freemo, do you have to stay in the center of Santo DOmingo? I went to a great hotel in the outskirts [east side of the bridge] close to the Mega Centro mall. It is called Aurora Del Sol [combination casino/disco], the place was real nice, clean and safe, i have NO complaints and enjoyed my short stay there. i went august and cost me $70 USD a night. this is a little on the high end but worth it for the comfort.
of course i had a car to drive around in and made my way easily all over the capital!

We stayed at the Embajador for a week when we arrived in Santo Domingo. The hotel is very nice, although a little tired. It is located in the Bella Vista area, so is a little further away. The rooms are large, the beds comfortable.

I personally haven't seen the Clarion, but a friend went to check out the rooms recently and said that it was very nice.

Ther is a new hotel in Maximo Gomez

Hi everyone thanks for your posts I really apreciate the feedback. I am going to cancel the reservation for the Barcelo Lina as I'vs heard lots of bad reports about it.

just spoke to my wife who is in Santo Domingo, she says theres a lovely new hotel in Maximo Gomez, near calle Balager I think she said but she doesn't know its name. Anyone got any ideas what its called.

I'm gonna try and google hotels in Maximo Gomez but don't know if I'll have any luck. In the meantime if anyone can identify this new one my wife spoke about please let me know.

Cheers guys, time is of the essence, we're arriving Tuesday 14t Oct.

I remember seeing a Holiday Inn being built but don't remember where. When I stayed at the Embajador I called the local number instead of booking online, I paid for the Executive floor and was upgraded to the Club Level. I think it was aboput $149/night... The Marriott runs about $119 (with a great breakfast buffet), The Clarion around $70-80. I can say the first two are worth every penny if you want something nice especially if you want to stay somewhere that feels like a hotel in the US...big, perfectly cleaned rooms, helpful staff that speaks English, excellent beds and linens, etc.

Confused apartments for hotel?

The "lovely new hotel" on Maximo Gomez, near Balaguer's house, is the Marriott.

Thanks Chiri

I think my wife has confused a new apartment block with a hotel perhaps.
Or is the Marriott newly built?

From searches on Google I get the impression it was built around 1999.

Anyway we have resolved the accomodation for my parents, thanks genuinely to all who chipped in with comments.
