Hello, This is my Second Thread on the DR1 website and I was refered here to this section by one of the fine moderators. Can some one please give me the correct definition of the term "barrio spanish"

and can you please tell me what this means?

"buenos dias mi amor discupame k no respondi aora fue k vi los mensaje yo me ascote tenprano a noche"

my google translater just butchers this sentences and I have yet to interpret it correctly

hello my love sorry that i didn't respond last night, i just read your messages now. i went to bed early last night

this isn't really barrio spanish, this is how most 20-25 year old dominicans write online (maybe with a few more spelling errors, but its not far off average)

As you were told, this is not barrio Spanish. This is typical uneducated texting.
KLK loko? PK no ? K conio esta aciendo? That sort of thing.

There is an error in number, "los mensajes" . And the most obvious giveaway was the "ascote"....She knew there was supposed to be an "s" in there, she just did not know where to put it. The "h"in the middle of "ahora" is a pesky little thing that she missed. As well, she also missed the "l" in disculpar, and what she wrote is closer to "spitting" (escupir) than "excuses". Finally, there is the "tenprano" which could be argued was just a misprint on her BB or keyboard. However, many Dominicans of all shapes and sizes do have an issue with pronouncing the "m"...and the "n" comes close enough...

As long as you have no long range plans for the young lady...no blood, no bad.

I know, Adrian, some of them are my students. However, they usually improve with time.
And the mistakes are a lack of education, nothing more. A university student txting will do a lot better job...Unless it is UTESA or UASD or something like that. U no wht i mean.

normal textspeak

This kind of writing is not really suggestive of poor education, people write text messages like this in all the languages, with abbreviations and many errors, it is not that easy to write on the keypad of a phone.

Thanks. Many "educated" people lack that knowledge.

Well, generally speaking it would be BUT the problem is text language is meant to ABBREVIATE. She didnt abbreviate, she MISSPELLED. There is your difference. You cannot misspell, omit, misplace and misuse several of the words by 1 letter and call that text language.

I agree here (I text a lot in both in English and French).

Typical chat in IRC back in the day:

"Q lo q papa, en q ta?

"Na loco aki mansueta"

"Conio, vite que mamasota fue ayer a la clase"

"Diablo si q cromito"

Think of it as a kind of dialect.

Why to crucify this poor lady? Most dominican go to a cyber cafe and make an effort to chat without any knowledge of previous use of computer. some of them use just 2 finger to write.
I have seen lot of very educated people that has not idea how to type correctly. My mother is an example, she has wrote several spanish books and with 75y/o she make some mistakes typing in a computer.( that would be imposible with a pen)

Buenos dias mi amor, disc?lpame que no te respond?. Ahora fue que vi los mensajes, yo me acost? temprano anoche.

This is what she wanted to type. Gramatically is not correct. but everybody would understand.
words like:
k=que (not a mistake, just an abrevation for text chat)
discupame, she missed a l. (typing)
aora, she missed a h (typing)
ascote, (typing error)
tenprano (here is a grammar error).
a noche (grammar or maybe typing error)
Los problemas de s?ntaxis y puntuaci?n son mayores que los de spelling.

Extreme:
Wonderful! I remember getting a lot of txts like that!!!

Johnny:
I gave logical explanations for those mistakes. I'd bet a few large that she was trying to write proper Spanish to the best of her abilities. You need to live here a bit longer..
