High Demand Items in the DR

This will be my first trip to the DR. I always try to subsidize the cost of travel through commerce.

What are some hot items in the DR?

For instance, in Cuba - Satellite Equipment from Directv or Dish Network go for much more than in the U.S. (my country of origin)

What would be good choices to bring with me? Laptop computers, wireless networking equipment, Sneakers, Gameboys...

What are the items Dominicans want?

Once there I plan to purchase clothing and possible some furniture to bring back.

Don't take it too bad: marry a dominican hooker, get her a visa. Your passport is probably the only valuable item you'll bring with you.

Almost everybody is broke here, and those who aren't DON'T need you. But this is not Cuba here, neither North Korea.

Broke or not, people do buy stuff down here!

I know a few people that bring stuff from abroad on trips and then, they resell the stuff here at nice prices. I don't really know how they sell since everybody claim to be broke, but they sell! If you want to do the same, bring some clothes (with a worthy label- its even more desirable), maybe some shoes and sneakers. Dominicans do some fabulous word of mouth, sell to a handful and watch a clientele rise if what you offer looks good, feels good, and doesn't hurt too much in the wallet. Again, everybody claims to be broke down here, but they always get the money for something that they truly want, which makes me wonder what exactly is the definition of broke!

Now this is funny. Designer clothes or knockoffs of designer clothes sell for less in the DR than in the states. If you listen to this you should buy mens clothes in your size so you can bring it back to the states.

Let me clarify my statement!

I said with a Label, that doesn't not mean it has to be legit. People just like the label in the DR for show, at least the low income people, the one that claim to always be broke but always dress relatively nice. At least, nicer than people at their income level dress in other countries!

I am not sure this is a good way to make money to pass through customs with counterfeited stuff with the intention to sell it to low income people.

Also the type of business NalOwhs is talking about implies networking, hence time. And quite probably the people is talking about are Dominicans selling to Dominicans (and 'fiao' on credit).

Plus, there are some Dominicans who buy in the States and resell at cost in DR, for some reason.

IMO, if you plan this to pay your vacations, maybe you'd better stay home.

You come with 8 suitcases of stuff to sell expect to buy off customs or have the stuff confiscated. One laptop great, 10 , goodbye to the 9, if not all 10.

I'm just saying what I've witness. I'm not saying that I have done it or that I'm experienced in such thing. If this guy wants to do such thing, he should know that there are people already doing it and bringing in a profit. Again, I don't know how they do it, but they are doing it. The other thing that he should consider is how often or how much effort has to be put into this. You surely don't want to spend your "vacation" working! But people are making nice profits by selling stuff they bring here. The profits are not enough to make a living on, but enough to pay for a good chunk of their trip costs! Again, I have only witness this from aquaintances that travel between here and U.S. or Europe. Usually they go to U.S. and Europe and then return back to the DR and start selling.

And for how they get it past custom, beats me. I'll try to get more info. for you and everybody else that's interested.

I'll say this, and hope I don't expose myself too much by doing so, BUT

I sold a knock-off designer bag to someone down there for $500 USD. They were very determined to buy it, they wanted it very bad. Asked me to name my price, never asked whether it was authentic. I felt like a sankie, but what would you do?

Needless to say, when in Rome, do as the Romans, guilt was replaced by the idea that this chick was willing to pay USD$$$ for this bag, as well as much more. Remember, I had to go completely into sankie-role. (I think I could do that for a living, too.) I recouped my entire trip $$$ in a matter of 2 hours!!!!!! :speechles

Dasching, if that's how you like to leverage your trip expenses, good luck!!! I'm sure my story is not common. Pure dumb luck. Just make sure that your goods are very-good knock-offs or authentic brand. Don't make it obvious to customs, either. I usually only travel with a carry-on bag and a portfolio. Everything fits in there. Flying into Santiago, I've never had my bags searched either way. Bulk brings attention. Just my experience.

Someone recently suggested car parts to me...but that's not something I plan on packing!

Just thinking here... Maybe that bag went for big bucks because it was going to be the model for a knock-off line of goods?

If anyone has contacts with the manufacturers of those goods, let me know. I would be happy to bring anything they want they want to buy.
