Once in the DR I saw two Dominican men at a venue holding hands as they talked and walked. No one seemed to pay much attention to this. Is this a normal thing for dominicans? I know that in other countries, men who are friends hold hands, in USA, Canada this is a 'NO-NO'.

Dominican men are very macho. There is no way you will see 2 dominican men holding hands and walking. These 2 men might have been gays. other possibilities could be, blind man being led to cross the street, father walking with his son etc.

I initially thought they were gay, but the fact that no one else looked at them confused me. One man was about 45-55 and the other looked like he was in his 20's. I asked my friend if it was normal for Dominican men to hold hands, he said "no", then I said "look at those two", he looked, but did not comment. Who knows maybe they were father and son.

Dominican WOMEN hold hands, this is normal.
You say One man was about 45-55 and the other looked like he was in his 20's - that sounds more like a gay Sankie than anything...

Oh my God, two people, men, holding hands? They are going to burn in HELL.

I am sure someone eventually called the police and threw those perverts in the pokey, where they belonged !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(why does this topic even merit a discussion. Two people, who happened to be men, held hands. jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze )

Not everyone shares your beliefs. We don't even know what the
relationship between these 2 men were.

Some cultures it's acceptable for men to hold hands. Just because where you are from it isn't acceptable doesn't mean that your way is the only way.

I could be wrong but I think Oceanbound was speaking with an ironic tongue.

True.....For all we know, they could have been father and son.

My son is a grown-axx man, about 5'11, and when we go out, when crossing the street, I DO hold his hand.....Also.....MOST of the time, we walk with my arm around his shoulder.

NOTHING wrong with a father showing his son affection.

Now, and I going to hold a male friend's hand?, NO WAY IN HELL!!!. Wahahaha!.

Oceanbound, there's no need for you to get upset.
I never said that the men were perverts or made any judgements against them personally. I was just curious as to whether this is customary in the DR or not. In places like Turkey men who are friends do hold hands, but in the US it is not the norm.

Holding hands is not gay.

Saludos!

I have been traveling to the Dominican Repubic for the past 18 years. During that time I have stayed in many small towns and lived with my Dominican friends and their families.
While, in general, there is mucho machismo, there is another side of the culture that may be confusing to some people living outside of the country.
In general, people in the Dominican Republic are very warm, open hearted, sensitive, and passionate.

Many times I have seen 2 men greet each other with a handshake and not let go during the entire length of a conversation.

To me it's an act of friendship, kindness, show of affection, openness, in other words a very human social response.

Of course, gay men also hold hands, but holding hands does not make them gay.

It's like a lot of other social issues that change as people go from childhood to adulthood....maybe even a loss of innocence?

The act itself is not harmful or obscene so why not leave it be?

That warmth and openness are part of the innate spirit of the Dominican people that makes me want to return to the DR. It is something to be appreciated and not berated.

Gracias,

Paul Gerace

I was being sarcastic. Sorry I didn't make it more obvious.

I see nothing particularly noteworthy about two people holding hands, regardless of their gender.
