We leave for the hv on jan 21st. We are a family of 4 (kids ages 6 & 10) We have been to the dr before and have experienced the no hot water and ant bites. Yet we still remember our first family vacation as one of our best. So we are going to go here with an open mind and hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised. I was wondering if anyone can recommend an excursion to a beautiful beach? I have seen ones to bacardi island, paradise island, samana.. Im hoping not to spend an arm and leg. Any input would be great!

they have a teen club

From the reports that are posted [on DR1.com; Debbies; and trip advisor] - I am getting the feeling that HVGB caters to the children and 'Adults Only' clients. I am traveling with teens and young adults ages 14 to 19 years old.
If anyone can give me some positive information that can support this age group we will stay with this booking - otherwise were going to cancel and try another resort location.
Can anyone recommend an alternative resort as listed in the 'Signature' resort booking locations at the D.R., that is good for this age group?
Thanks

they have a teen club 9-15,

Click on the red X. Right Click and goto Properties.

Copy the entire link and paste that into the link bar on IE.

The pictures will then show up and work just fine.

Reply back if you need more help.

Teens and young adults

Thanks Boogiewgirl for your reply

We were looking forward to things like:

- a third pool with the only swim up bar [which is now off limits to the 'adult upgrade' persons only] and was not specified in the 'Signature' Boucher and is a major point for us -- as we loose a third pool.

- we understand from the previous posts that the water slides are two small for adults.

- The 'jump feature'/ zip line is a pay as you go after you make an initial deposit.

- no evening swimming which is a favorite amonst us and teens - never had experienced this - heck at old 'paradise beach' just around the corner from HVGB we swam in the evening.

I am certain that things are going to improve - but losing the third pool was not made known to us when we booked in September.

I have already contacted my TA to get onto 'Signature' for relocation.

Swim up Bar

Hi,
The swim up bar is supposed to be available for everyone! How certain are you of this?
Cheers

swim up pool

just to let you know the only people that can use the swim up pool are the people staying in the adult only section
Also have to say we had 3 teenagers with us and they didn't join in with the activities they felt too old but the resort did have lots of smaller children there, maybe once there are more older teens there it will be better have to say wasn't really a problem for ours they make their own entertainment in the day on the beach etc but even in the evening it does tend to be more geared to the younger ones.
there is a wavelength room for up to 15 but nothing for the 16 to 18 year olds

I know when we stayed in Mexico the best time to book the a la cart restaurants was first thing in the morning.

16 to 19 is a tough age in any resort! They are not kids but neither are they adults. Just hope there are others of the same age to hang with!

Also in Playa Dorada Plaza there is a movie theatre - very inexpensive. That might help. The movies change weekly. There are three smaller theatres, comfy seats and air conditioned.

jeep safari tour

We have a little over a week before we leave for HV, I am getting excited!

I was wondering if the jeep safari would be appropriate for my almost 6 year old? It sounds like a great adventure for him (and me!) Can anyone speak to this?

Thank you!

Make the best of things and enjoy our Holiday

Thanks to everyone for all the info on HV and to Planner for all your help. We are not going until Aug 07 - hopefully a lot of the problems will have been ironed out by then? We are taking 2 x 14 yr old boys with us so hope that there will be some fun stuff for them to do. Its a shame that the slides don't take adults, the wave pool and slides were one of the things that attracted us to this resort in the first place.

We have never been to the DR before but will be determined to make the best of things and enjoy our holiday, it looks like Paradise from Planner's photos! However running sewage and all the other bad stuff that has been reported does not exactly fill us with confidence.

We did not know that First Choice & Signature (all one company anyway!) has the complete occupancy option on this hotel. Having been to a First Choice completely 'family' targeted hotel in Crete in 2004 on a last minute cheapy, we are afraid, on learning this, that we will not be partaking much of the entertainment. In Crete it was completely 'birdie song' and 'bingo' unfortunately. We were hoping we would get more Dominican flavour at HV but there doesn't sound like much hope of that.

On the Adult only area issue. As the two boys are classed as adults and we have paid adult prices for them, we have two rooms booked in the Royal Suite area having realised, from the UK brochure, that this would entitle us to have access to the adult pool area - however we think it is disgraceful that Signature, as part of the same company, did not make it clear in their brochure for their Canadian customers that access to this area would be denied to those booking standard rooms. It is quite understandable that Signature customers are not happy about this.

We will be contacting First Choice about the reported problems at HV and request clarification of the progress being made, and will report back with their reponse.

A belated happy New Year to everyone.

6 days to go - 29 of us!

Hello!

We are leaving in 6 days, arriving January 9th at HVGB.

There are 29 of us, all members of an extended family. So all age groups will be reprensented from approx. 9 to 85 ... and quite a few teenagers (14-17).

I will make sure to let you know how our week goes, I feel positive. If we have beverages, beach, and a bot of food, we will have a blast!

Comments have been getting better, so hopefully, we won't have as many issues as you poor guys who went earlier.

Thanks to everyone for the great info ... especially Planner ...

I would like everyone to know that HV is a disaster. I have been to a number of resorts over the years and this place should not be visited. Myself and a large number of similar folks are working on a class action against Signature if we cannot get satisfactory resolution from them. I have never tried to go back at my TA over vaction that I have taken through them so the notion that some folks may have that I am trying to grab back some money is unfounded. I am trying to warn everyone that this place is a joke and if u can pull back do it. It is by far not a four star maybe a two and anyone who comes up and supports the resort is on the inside and do not believe them. It is too easy to go elsewhere when you have negative comments so do that. One thing that has not been mentioned to date is how the buffet is basically open are and infested with flies. I limited myself to getting food off the areas where they were cooking and stayed away from the buffet itself. No wonder so many have become sick. Do not bury your head in the sand and say I am there for the sun and drink you will be disappointed.
