Hello everyone,
We just got back from a week at HV, and wanted to pass along my observations. First of all, we had a great, relaxing time. The staff is amazing, accommodating and friendly. This was our second time in Puerto Plata, and we have travelled every year for the last 13 yrs to resort destinations in NA, MX and the Carib ranging from 3-5 star, so this is based on those comparisons, not our local Hilton. IMHO the resort did perhaps open about a month too early. They are still scrambing to get things done, but if you are laid back, and going in the next week or so, it should be fine.

The food is good, lots for everyone. Pasta station, fish, chicken, beef, salads, soup, bread, lots of fresh fruit, local items, kid friendly stuff (hotdogs, fries). The buffet has tons of choice and varies everyday. The restaurants that you need reservations for are fine too (mexican, asian, italian), but they take approx. 10 tables at 630pm and 830pm with 2 waiters, so service can be pretty slow. Caribbean restaurant is still being built. Maybe open in a couple of weeks?
Spa, gym, playground weren't open this week, but should be any day.
Entertainment staff, kids club, swim and soccer instructors are all from Canada or UK. My son did the swim lessons (MUCH cheaper to book before you go than pay locally) and his teacher was amazing!! Waiters, bartenders, front desk, maids, chefs are locals. All the staff really went above and beyond. Very impressed with staffing.
We stayed in a Family Room. Very dark and very small. The room was the disappointment of the trip. The bathroom is 7x5 (including tub, toilet, sink), the main bedroom is 10x13 (including closet, desk, king bed, 2 night tables, tall dresser and mini fridge) Coffee maker, iron and blowdryers are in the rooms. The kids room has a wall partition and swinging "bar doors" into it. It is 6x9 with a bunkbed and a wall mounted TV. They didn't have a gaming system yet, but I think it's supposed to be in there at some point. We were lucky and only had 1 day with no hot water, but it wasn't uncommon to hear of families going 3 days without. Our power would go out frequently in the afternoon, but I think it was with the construction going on during the day they would pop a breaker. We didn't spend much time in the room so it was ok. Tip: to keep mosquitos out of your room, put a towel infront of the outside door.

The rooms have bottled water when you arrive. I would suggest hanging onto the bottles and refilling them at the bars. They would sporadically have small bottled water available at the bar, but it was hit and miss. They don't have the 5 gallon jugs outside of the rooms, but who knows, they might soon. Every day we saw more things get finished (signs put up, fire extinguishers hung up, clocks placed in the rooms)

There is a cinema that has a movie on each night, and a kids movie in the afternooon. Seats about 20. You can also rent a movie in the main office for about $5USD if you bring a DVD player or laptop.
Evening shows start at 8pm with an interactive one for the kids (great for under 10), bingo at 9, main show at 930, more entertainment at 1030.

Beach is beautiful. Pools are fun! The wave pool is pretty slippery, so water shoes would be a good choice to bring. Water slides are fun.
Bring the mosquito spray! My husband got no bites, my son got 1, I got about 50. Some people they just love more than others.
Internet cafe has 4 stations available for $6/hr. Apparently WiFi is coming soon.
Zip line was way too high for me to try, but looked fun.
Teen room and kids club rooms are great.
Aquannox bar is pretty smoky, as it's inside, but looked really great.
Fresh popcorn at main bar in the afternoons was a nice treat.

This was a nice family holiday. I would like to see the resort in another couple of months, once everything is finished and running smoothly.

You will need long pants/dresses for the "reservation restaurants".
Hotel is pretty accessible for strollers/wheelchairs.

Have fun and enjoy your trips!
Hi Everyone,

Just got back after a week at HV ( Dec 7-14). The resort only opened on Nov 30. Like Monica said, everything was great but with a few things there that are a work in progress. While we were their, work was ongoing. They really do try to accomodate! Front desk must have had a list as long as Santa's but they were working with everyone.

My family was there with my two sisters and their families ( 9 of us) and we all had a different family room layout. I have been in 4 layouts. We had an issue with our room, the air conditioner froze up and water and drywall in the bathroom was coming down. They were very accommodating by moving us into the same bungalow as the rest of my family. My hubby, god bless him helped my two sisters with their water situation. Their hot water tanks were on Vacation mode, turned on to hot and fired up, also turned on the water. All was well.

As for everything else, we all had a great time their with our families with kids,5 yrs, 6 yrs, 13 and 16 yrs old. There was something for everyone! My family want to come back again! We know it will be even better next time when all is completed.

Have a great time!

family room layouts

Hi Connie,

You said you were in four different family room layouts, did they all have a separate bedroom? We are taking our 1 year old and hoping we can put him to sleep in one room and stay up in another room without him being able to see or hear us. Would that be possible in all the layouts you saw?

Thanks for the info! Glad you had a good trip!

Hi Dawn,

The description that Monica wrote is very accurate.

The three of the layouts have you going through the kids room to get to the bathroom. As our layout had the bathroom (which was bigger) to the right as soon as you walk into the room. He won't see you but he might hear you but yes you will have privacy.

I hope that helps.

Hi All,
Firstly a big thanks to planner for all the great info.Secondly all the talk about adult only areas will my daughter age 13 be allowed to go to these areas and drink alcohol as through first choice when it came to booking the accommodation she was classed as an adult.I think I know the answer already but feel free to discuss.

Regards
Stephen

Hello Stephen,
Even though you pay regular rates for teens at hotels, they are still not an adult in the DR. Your 13 year old will have a different color wristband that indicates that she is underage and not allowed to order alcohol. I can not answer for the adults only area, as we didn't go in while there.
Just to let everyone know, almost all of the children, were at the wave pool and waterslide - not the main activity pool, other than for their swim lessons. So even if you aren't able to get into the adults only pool, the main pool was mostly adults anyways. How about with your stay Connie?

I'm curious as to the the check-in situation. We'll be arriving late in the evening and would very much prefer if the check-in was either pre-done on the bus to the resort or very speedy on arrival. We've had occasions where check-ins have lasted an hour...

How much is the golf? Lots fo questions - Please answer

 Hi all,

We have 14 of us coming on the 26th. We have 6 adults and 8 kids (10-20). I have a few questions if you could help

1. What is the legal drinking/ gambling age?
2. How far is the casino from HV?
3. Is there access to cash - bank machines?
4. Should you bring canadian or american money?
5. How much is golf - and is it tough to get on?
6. How do you reserve the sit down restaurants?
7. How much money should a person bring? - what are the things to do that cost money?
8. My wife asks if there are irons in the room or available?
9. Is there massage tables set up outside or just in the spa or what?
10. Should we bring anything to leave behind for the local people as gifts? Any suggestions on what is needed?
11. Can anyone tell me their best experience there or excurision they went on? Which things should be avoided?
12. My son asks if there is candy available easily?
Thanks for the info - I loved the pictures. We are all getting excited and are in that pre trip mode of getting everything done.

running

Thanks to all who have posted - the interchange has been most helpful over the last several weeks, especially the first-hand accounts. I have a few quick questions that I hope somebody might be able to answer (planner?).
1. I am a runner and run daily. Are there boardwalks around the beach or roads that are easily accessible from HV? Is it safe to run alone most mornings off of the resort?
2. When I check the weather forecast, they call for intermitent showers. Are they short this time of year (we would get them in St. Kitts, St. Martin, Hawaii. etc but they came and left quickly) or should I bring any rain attire for the kids?
3. What other physical activies are available at the resort if any? Weights, classes, etc.

Thank you for taking the time to answer these and I am looking forward to going next week with family.

OBE for Planner & I do love kids, but I couldn't eat a whole one!

Hi all,

My wife & I are due to fly out on April 7th to stay at HV over Easter & having read throught this thread, I just had to chuck in my two pen'th......

Firstly, everyone these days thinks their kids are the best behaved in the world, butter wouldn't melt, etc. Thats why school teachers get beaten up by parents these days for daring to tell kids off & why Adult Only holidays, etc are so popular. We paid extra to not have kids bombing us while we try to swim & to not have them running riot whilst their parents hear & see nothing! So, I do hope we will not witness the poor staff at this lovely resort being harangued by people who think their 'little angel' should be able to go in the Adults Only areas. Likewise, if people feel their brochure has misinformed them, could they please take it up with their agent or tour operator BEFORE they come, rather than being bolshie & confrontational with the resort staff?

Secondly, I would like to endorse every single posting here which has applauded Planners contributions. The amount of investigation, the pictures, the quality of information has just been superb. The insight we have got from this thread has been phenomenal. Are you sick of chocolate yet Planner? If not, we will be bringing some, together with as many pencils, pens, etc that we can pack. Just let me know how we can pass it on to you when we come. Oh & I'm sure we can stretch to a Cuba Libre or two!

A couple of quick questions:

I believe shorts cannot be worn in the speciality restaurents, but can they be worn at meal times in the other restaurents? I'm not an advocate of swimwear dripping all over the seats, but are 'tailored' or smart allowed?

If bringing cash, is US dollars the best option, or is stirling widely accepted?

We can't wait to get out to HV & know we will have the time of our lives. The place looks brilliant!!

Cheers.

a few answers

eurostar21 - minifridge has 2 each of water, beer and pop when you check in. Restocked sporadically.

spire2000 - check-in can only be done at the resort. it only takes 5 minutes per family. they have you sign in, everyone gets a wristband and room card. length of time depends on how many arrive at the same time as you, as they only have 1 or 2 at the desk. the real wait is for the two bellboys to take you and your bags to your room in the golfcart.

bodders - shorts/beach cover ups are fine in the main buffet restaurant.

runner - no boardwalks on the beach, but you could run safely all around the Playa Dorada complex as it's gated (holds 15 resorts). rain gear is probably not necessary, maybe a hoodie and umbrella at most. there is a small gym on site, it wasn't finished last week, but looking in there was 2 stationary bikes and a few weight machines. no free weights, balls or mats. no exercize classes last week, maybe to come?

garyphil - 1)18 2)casino is onsite 3) USD 6) book restaurant day before at the reps desk in reception between 900-1100/1500-1700 8)yes in room 9) 2 massage rooms in the spa, none outdoors 12) yes candy in the giftshop

don't forget the mosquito spray - $15US in the giftshop :)

if people feel their brochure has misinformed them, could they please take it up with their agent or tour operator BEFORE they come, rather than being bolshie & confrontational with the resort staff?

Who said anyone was going to go down there and be bolshie and confrontational?

I can again only assume you are from the UK :) and booked from First Choice which has an accurate website about the adults area.

The hotel has no say in what is booked or not booked, thus I would not make an issue with them.

We have gone though are agent and will get what the brochure states, I promise you that.

I, like you would like to go to an area where I can get anyway from the children. I have 2 of my own and would like to take a weeks break.

Please look at my previous post and PLEASE click the link and read the webpage. PLEASE give me some feedback as to your view on what is offered in the package. I would be surprised if you get a different opinion that mine. While, come to think about it .... You paid for the upgrade. So knowing our situation you will of course think that I am being selfish because I didn't pay the extra $200 per person to get to go into the adults area.

Problem is: The statement says I can go into the area, thus I will not stop until I get access. I don't see the problem. All they would have to do is give us a different colour braclet (same colour as yours) and still book us in the room with all the families (which is perfect for us)

In all my posts I have never asked for anything extra. All I want is what the brochure states. Nothing more, nothing less.

So in closing, we can go post for post if you would like, but I will not back down from my position. I will NOT do anything down in the DR. I will have a blast no matter what happens, but think about this:

--- Isn't this fun to debate ? Keeps me excited about our vacation. ---

I have nothing better to do right now. I would rather an active fourm about everyone going on vacation. Keeps everything on the top of your mind. For some (me included) love to come home or wake up in the morning and see if someone has replied to this post. If this post can get to 30 pages, I would like to think I did my part and kept everyone thinking about the DR and the HV.

Good Day,

Ottawa Senators

----- oh btw - they won 3-1 last night ---- Woot Woot

Adults Only

Sens Fan:
If you look on the right hand side of your brochure it lists the "Included Features" in pink. Nowhere does it say access to the adults only section. At the bottom, it gives you the option of upgrading your package...

Quote
Upgrade Your Package!
Nov 01, 2006 - Dec 23, 2007
Royal Suites are available exclusively for adults. Located close to the beach, this private, adults-only section is separate from the main resort area, yet guest still have access to all the service and facilities of the Holiday Village. In addition, Royal Suite guest also receive: separate check-in, Concierge, VIP Club House, continental breakfast, adults-only beachfront section and pool with swim-up bar, Jacuzzi, priority reservations at a la carte restaurant, free Internet access. There are three room categories to choose from: Royal Deluxe Room, Royal Jacuzzi Junior Suite, Royal Jacuzzi Master Suite. Please inquire for details.

The section you quoted from the left side of the brochure merely states what the resort offers in general. I am booked to go on March Break and the only reason I took the upgrade was the fact that there will likely be hundreds of kids running around and I wanted to stay clear of that. It was always my understanding from talking to my agent, that the upgrade allowed you to stay in the adults area or enjoy the rest of the resort but persons not taking the upgrade could not go in the adults section...

Good luck though...

Holiday Village Golden Beach - Puerto Plata - Included Features - Signature Vacations

This is under the link : Included Features

In another brochure sent out by Signature there is a section that says upgrade your package.

But ... In the paragraph it states that it has an adults only pool without any * beside it saying that would be an upgrade.

I'm not here to cause waves (or am I lol), I am just here having some fun. I just want to swim in the pool. :) I'm not asking for the world.

:) I'm still having fun with this, and hope no one is really getting offended because this is not meant to be mean.

Hi Monica,

We really didn't hang out at the main pool either or attempt the adult pool. With a 5, 6, 13 and 16 yr old we spent about 85% at the wave pool and 15% at the beach. The wave pool and waterslide were a huge hit!

Hello forum!
First of all, thanks for all of the great info and especially to connie and monica for the first reviews! I have a question for the two of you. I'm travelling to HV in February with my family and we're really into snorkelling. I was just wondering what the snorkelling was like at HV and if equipment is available?
Thanks again!
