my wife daughter and I returned to the uk this morning after a wonderful 2 weeks at the holiday village.Sad to hear about the thefts but we made sure all our valuables were locked away in the room safe which you sign for the key when you book in.
The safe is deep and large enough to hold nintendo,s games ,large wallets ,jewellery purses and lots of other nick nacks.

Just want to touch on the vacation
Yes the standard room was small but who wants to be in there room most of the time.It had a fridge stocked with soft drinks and beer and we had hot running water all the time and not once did our toilet get blocked. The room maid kept the room clean and we had fresh towels everyday.
The grounds of the hotel were kept immaculate and the wedding gazebo was all spruced up with new plants and flowers for the two weddings i saw there.
The food was excellant in my opinion and there was plenty of choice. The A la Cartes were brilliant and our favourite was the the carribean on the beach and again these only took about 5 minutes to book everyday.
The staff were very friendly and you never waited to long to be served at the bars.
The three trips we went on were Whale Watching,Horseriding and the Catamaran all booked through the hotel and we came away from each one so fullfilled apart from the horseriding which was tough on my thighs and had me walking around like john wayne for a few hours after.

I was concerned with some of the reviews before we left the UK and I cannot see what half the fuss is about.
If you over indulge with food and drink and add that to scorching sunshine then you will get the bombay trots and a dickie tummy.
If people speak to the staff rudely then it wont get them anywhere.

Im certain the resort has got over some of the teething problems it had when it first opened and in my opinion it will get better

Wish I was there now as its pouring rain and cold back in Blighty

How old is your daughter? Was she able to eat in the carribbean restaurant? If not what did she do? We have a 13 year old (going on thirty) and would like to try all the restaurants.

Hi Planner or anyone who has recently been In any of the A La Carte restaurants can you get a steak or are there any good steak restaurants near by

You need to see the cows, then ask about steak!! Ha! Ha! The times we were in the dominican before I found the steak tough. It also depends how it is cooked. The pork was the best! make sure you try the goat!
Seeingthe butcher shops you may not ever want to eat meat.

When are you going again? I don't know what the tea in the UK is like, but it is in bags usually single servings with a string attached to the bag. They had different brands. The only thing that I don't like is I like my water boing hot just out of the kettle not the urns as it does not seem to be as hot.

hi darwenlass as far as i can remember from my visits, the waiters always offered us a beautiful caddy containing every variant of tea bag that twinings do from which we chose... that said it was not at this resort but i assume most are the same. i found the milk awful personally and always take the long life single cup ones with me now when we go.

Im just wondering about the catamaran, someone said they booked it through the hotel, i was just wondering if you had to pay for it, because on first choice website and brochure it says catamaran sailing, but nothing about having to pay for it.

There were coffee machines in the standard rooms, so they most certainly will be in the royal suites :)

Blissful holiday

We returned from our vacation last tuesday morning. Our flights out of manchester and returning were great, the staff on board the planes were fab, no problems there, however the staff in the resort were awful, surly, unhelpful people. We are not complainers, this is or 10th time at this resort and we loved it when it was Jack Tar, and we made the best of this holiday and had a fantastic time. There are lots of repeaters there at this time of year and it was great to see some old friends. The staff are amazing as always. Can't say enough for them, they especially love to see people return and are always glad to make you feel really welcome. We are like family to some of them. We were the only Irish girls in the resort and we know how to party! Thanks for putting up with us!!

We made some suggestions to Freddy and he took them on board, the stools around the main bar are coming back!! We love to hang out around the bar at night and they had taken the stools away! They are gone to be painted now and should be back any day> Hurray, the guests have developed this annoying habit of getting in line for drinKs, that is far too civilised for us!!! Anyway, any problems with the hotel are made by First Choice/signature.
The staff and management have their hands tied ( not literally) and have to conform to the First Choice rules.

We will be making our suggestions to First Choice/Signature and suggest you all do the same.
Evening entertainment, needs cleaning up. Who wants Mother goose at 11 in the evening? Kids should be in their rooms at that time of night and not running around!

They are kept busy during the day and they have got that bit right for sure. The day time entertainment is great for kids, so much for them to do.

But come on give us our Dominican Culture back in the evening!! We used to love the evening entertainment! The local dancers arrived every other evening and the Fun Club team shows were a gas!! The evening always finished with a couple of dances on the stage and all were welcome to join in.

I DID NOT COME TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC TO PLAY BINGO! I can go to Butlins for that. Ok, keep the Bingo if you must, but off the main stage at 8 in the evening please. There are pleanty of places to hold it if you must.

Any responses to my comments??

We had a fantastic time, and thanks to all our amazing staff - so many of us go backtime and time again to see them and because of them! Our little gang of friends - Sandy, John, Cathy, Tom, and all that lovely group, Our dear friends who have been there for many years and made a special effort this year fron Boston. Cathy and Harry. There are far too many to mention. We could be found on most evenings hanging out at the main bar laughing and having a great time.

FIRST CHOICE - IF YOU READ THESE REVIEWS PLEASE PLEASE TAKE NOTE- MANUEL ON THE BEACH IS NOT A SHARK AS YOU TELL EVERYONE IN YOUR WELCOME MEETING. HE IS A LOVELY MAN WHO SELLS THE SAME TRIPS AS YOU BUT A LOT CHEAPER! HIS HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS ARE THE SAME AS YOURS. SO YOU HAVE A BIT OF COMPETITION!! THAT'S OK, LEAVE PEOPLE TO MAKE THEIR OWN MINDS UP!

Just one more point that I would like to make. I brought my gHD's down this year for the first time, I usually just bring an old remington hair straightners and they work to a point, they never get as hot as they would at home.
LADIES LISTEN TO THIS - GHD's dont work at all, not a bit, not in the slightest! Disaster! However, my lovely friend from Boston brought me a set of american straightners over when she came and they were fantastic!!!!!

Sorry for the long post. let me know if you were there the same time as us.

The Irish Girls !!!!

Review & Comments - Hvgb

We just got home, after 7 days at HVGB. Here is my review.

Check In - Check Out: We arrived from Edmonton, AB on Wed., Feb. 21, in the evening. There were about 30 of us on the Signature bus from the airport. Check in was handled quickly. They gave us our room cards and towel cards, along with the "First Choice/Signature Guide Book (which, by the way, is a must read. Lots of good information there). No problem. We were the last ones to check in and I noticed that if the guests didn't ask for the safe key, they didn't offer it at all. Overall, I think the front desk staff could have been more helpful. All during our stay they often didn't "understand" our requests. Check out went smoothly, and I have no complaints there. There is a secure baggage room and courtesy rooms, so guests can shower and change into their travelling clothes, if need be.

Our Room: We booked a standard room. And it was that - VERY standard. The TV only received 6 channels, all Spanish. We sure weren?t there to watch TV anyway, so, no big deal. (I would have liked an English news channel, though). We didn't plan on being in our room much either, so we didn?t need ay frills. Everything was very clean. One complaint is that after the first day we never got any wash cloths or hand towels, for 3 days. We tipped very well, from day one, so I don't think that was the problem. We always had lots of bottled water, but they never restocked the beer or soft drinks that we consumed. Not a problem, just an observation. A lot of people have written that their fridge wasn't very cold. Maybe most don't realize that for refrigerators to be efficient they require some air flow. If you leave the cabinet doors open, all the time, everything will become (and stay) very cold. Our room was about as far from the main buildings and beach as you could get. It was by the casino and water park. It was pretty noisy all the time. My husband has arthritis in his hips and knees. When I booked, I requested a room close to all the amenities. I was told they would do their "BEST". When we shared our concern with the hotel staff that he would have trouble walking so far each day, we were told "No problem...call the desk and we will send the porter to pick you up and bring you to the lobby". Every time we tried, IF they answered the phone, we were told no one would be able to pick us up. We were told we could not change our room either. This is the one thing that I am angry about. There were other guests with mobility problems, too, and I think a shuttle service would REALLY have improved our stay. Others we spoke with about this agreed. (I am now trying to book a vacation (elsewhere) so he can rest from his "vacation" at HVGB. (Not really, just kidding).

Restaurants and Bars: We found the food very satisfactory. The tomatoes were the best I have ever tasted. (Even better than the ones I have grown myself). We certainly never went hungry. I think if you can?t find anything to eat, especially at the buffet, you are probably too picky and should stay at a 5 Star Hotel instead. We never had any trouble booking our dinner reservations, for any of the restaurants. They take reservations for dinner, for the next day, from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. and again from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. daily, 2 seating times are available..6:30 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. The only complaint I have regarding food is, that the "snacks" located in the internet area, were often bombarded by the birds, if people didn't cover the trays up again, after selecting their cookies or sandwiches, or whatever was being served.
The bartenders were generous with the libations, and all the drinks we tried were great. The beer was excellent. I found the adult bar to be a little bit loud, but it was certainly ok for a quick drink. Only one complaint about all the bars...no Canadian Rye Whiskey!! Almost everyone using this thread have complained or been worried about becoming sick, from the food and water. We all tend to get "travellers diarrhea" when we go on a holiday such as this. It usually happens around the 4th day. People are too quick to blame just the food and water. Remember, your body has had a big adjustment to make, with climate changes and time changes, alone. Water is a problem, if you are careless. When you are out of the resort even "bottled" water is questionable. I suggest to either get the "travellers diarrhea" Vaccine..DUKORAL? ..or bring lots of Imodium?. (It does the job).

The Beach and Pools: We didn't try the wave pool, but we enjoyed the main pool area. If you have "little ones" who will be using the wading pool, be careful around the "rocks". They are fabricated rocks and my husband found a rebar wire sticking out quite far. If anyone (little or big) were to scrape against it they could be cut quite badly. We did report it to the Signature rep, so hopefully this is no longer a concern. The beach was lovely, with very soft, golden sand. They raked the seaweed and debris off the beach quite often, with minimum disruption to the sunbathers. There were usually lots of sun beds available and getting clean, dry beach towels was never a problem. The drinks are good at the beach bar. The lunch menu is good, too. The Steak sandwich..Mmmmm. Overall, a great time at the beach.

Security: One thing that really concerned me was the fact that "locals" who do not work at the resort, and guests from other hotels are permitted access to the casino and night club, and maybe more facilities that I am not aware of. There was at least one theft while we were at HVGB. This I know to be a fact. (Friends we were travelling with knew the victims personally). (That theft was not a "rumour"). Their room was ransacked, the thieves were looking for the safe key or valuables of any sort. Their laptop did not fit into the safe, so of course it was left out and available. Signature/First Choice should have dealt with the matter right then, by issuing a warning to the other guests. I think we had a right to be warned. By keeping it quiet, the rumour mill starts. Pretty soon there were 10 robberies, instead of the one that actually happened. Who will ever know how many really took place? Signature said they would "look into it" but they had no real hope of ever finding the thief. (The cleaning staff was implicated). I think it is pretty hard to accuse the staff only, when they are allowing all types of strangers onto their resort. Ultimately, you are the one in charge of your security and protecting your valuables. Do yourself a favour...leave your expensive electronics at home. The safe is a free service...USE IT. It's not large, but it's big enough to hold your passports, jewellery, money and small electronics, etc.
The only trouble I had with being ripped off, while at HVGB, was when I had to print my e-document off the Signature website, for the return flight. (A total of 5 pages). It costs $0.50 US per page to print. I was prepared to pay $3.00 US, since they don't believe in giving change in the Dominican Republic. Imagine my surprise when the attendant tried to charge me $10.00 US. I called him on it, and he apologized when he realized that if I reported him, he could loose his job. Hardly worth the seven bucks he hoped to pocket.
Just always be aware of what you are buying and what you are paying for it. Pretty simple really.

There were all ages there when we were there, and I think there is something for everyone to enjoy, you just have to look for it. They have lots of activities for the kids.

By the way?the Yuk Yuk?s Comedy Club was well worth the price of admission. We really enjoyed it.

IN CLOSING, WE THOUGHT THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC WAS BEAUTIFUL. THE HOTEL OVERALL, WAS ADEQUATE, FOR THE PRICE.

Not long now!

Hey, it's only 4 & a bit weeks before we head out, so time to ask one or two questions:

1) We are travelling from the UK & I assume i will need currency for tourist visa, departure tax & other non all inclusive needs. Is US Dollars the best bet or anyone want to suggest a better idea?

2) I would love to try Deep Sea fishing, but having read a bit, know you need to pick a good company who know what they are doing. Looking on the web, it seems there are a few, though most seem to work out of Punta Cana. Has anyone got any recommendations?

3)One for Planner. We hope to brings some stuff for the local school(s). It won't be a huge amount as space may be short. Pens & Pencils mainly I expect. So, how can we get this stuff to you Planner together with some chocolate to say thanks for all of your stirling efforts in finding out so much for so many on this forum?

Thats all for now, though I'm sure I'll think of more to ask! :ermm:

RE: ITEM 2): They offer a dee sea fishing tour at the First Choice/Signature desk in the hotel. It looked pretty good but I am not sure what it cost. They will be happy to answer your questions.

Clarification on Security:

Just so everyone is aware the people who have access to the casino and nightclub do NOT have access to the hotel! That building is separate and fenced, the parking and entry are separate as well. Most likely the person or persons who broke into the room did not come from the casino and disco.

Sounds like you had a good holiday though!

Bodders: US money is best! Deep sea fishing - there are a couple companies here on the north coast, contact Isaira Tours - Dominican Republic for info.

And just send me an email or PM and I will give you my number so you can contact me! And thanks in advance......
