I knew it seemed too good to be true. A month! I have a serious internet addiction to feed. We'll have to see if a gatuidad might prove helpful. If not, there will be a spike in business at a local bar with wifi.

When you finish with the main office in PP you will have a contract with a name and number on it. In Sosua there is a Claro Tower in El Batey and a lot of trucks with workers there. Grab one of them and tell him you are waiting for installation and you will give him say 2,000 pesos to install the internet and show him the contract. Watch how fast you get installation then.

Worked for me, should for you also.

Lindsey,

That price seems kind of high for the speed you are getting. There must be a reason you are still with them after all this time. I'll take it that you are satisfied with the service and or have no other choice. Thanks for the input.

With two promising avenues to follow, I'll consider this conundrum resolved and move on to the next.

It is high. They consider this the VIP program. Not real sure what that means, other than that I pay more.

The lower bandwidth was not sufficient for my online classes. I needed reliable service. And I must say that I am happy with the service. I signed an 18 month contract, so for now, I am hooked.

I live in Las Canas. I use DeLancer cable....and love it. I will tell you why. I have lived in Costa Rica, Medellin, Puerto Vallarta. The most reliable Internet to date is....Delancer. It Does have bad days....but not often. I once was having problems and they sent out an English speaking tech on a Saturday morning! They DO answer their service number! I have my own line...not the line for the residences here. I have 3Mb service that performs at 2.70 (or so). My upload speed works at 1.4 Mb (that is a miracle in the 3rd world). I have had 6Mb service from the same company. I am unaware of anything between 3 and 6 MB. I pay $100 for 3 Mb...and am HAPPY to pay this inflated price because I get reliable Internet. 6 MB (5.70) (1.5) costs $140 U.S. I am an intense Skype user (classes) and the 3 Mb service works well because the upload speed is just the best for Skype. Bring a Microsoft 3000 or 6000 digital USB headset...and you are in business on the net.

having it ready close to the time you arrive is probably not possible. Planning ahead is not Dominican. The norm is you go to the office, they lie to you about how long it will take. Then they take three times longer than they lied. You go without internet for at least a month. Ask me how I know this.

I have found out that Delancer is already providing the cable service to our house which is included in our rent. I have been quoted $245 US for internet installation, + 1 month deposit, + 1 month in advance for $99 US/month for 3 mb service. $500 upfront seems like a lot for 3mb service.

I wish there was a Delancer website I could check out for more info and options. I would prefer a faster connection and a semi-static IP address. We'll get it sorted out with enough money and time...

That does sound expensive! We pay something like 3500 pesos for both the fastest internet and the best tv package. (We didn't get the porn channels :-( ) I really don't remember paying that much up front.

I find here that really it is better to get info at the actual store and not online. I wanted to get prepared before we moved too but it really is kind of difficult, at least in our area it was.

I manage a small hotel (10 rooms) and we use Claro. I'd like to increase the bandwidth, but it has been fine and 2.5 world reliable.

I have been to more than a few of the bars with wifi. The best is Jose O'Shays in Cabarete if you can get there easily. Wifi with catnip as they say.

Yes, you are right. I stand corrected. I have 6 mb service. I actually receive 5.5 when I do the speed test. It may cost $140, but prior to writing previously, I checked my bill and receipt. It was for $138. Don't know why.

Never to late for a bump

I'm relatively new to the Internet side of things on the North Coast and currently have Delancer/Atlantico. Some days are good......others not so much. I'm curious to know if the previous posters recommendations with Claro still hold true after almost two years.

Any updates are appreciated

Claro is cheaper for the same speed as offered by Delancer. It is more of a hassle to open a Claro account than it is with the cable company. Claro reliability of service is generally good and compared to Delancer, comparable in my experience. Nothing is perfect or 100% reliable.

The monthly savings can be quite significant with Claro over Delancer. If you live in an area serviced by Claro Fiber, run, do not walk to Claro and sign up.

Since leaving the hotel biz & moving to a different part of Sosua, I use Orange at home and it works great. When there is electricity. All I do is phone & WiFi---I don't have (or want) TV.
