Did some searching on Trip Advisor and decided that I wanted the Iberstar..

Cadaques is a two minute drive from the Iberostar or about a ten minute walk. Not sure if cadaques is pet friendly. If it is, could be an option for people with pets.

Checked with my local cabbie who said it would be 3500 DOP to take us out there. Same to pick us up.

New sections of highway were built in San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana in addition to or as part of the coral highway. Once you are on Las Americas Highway from Santo Domingo, should be a 4 lane road all the way to the exit for Bayahibe. Only traffic light along that route, I can imagine now, is the one for the turn for Boca Chica.

90 minutes or less Santo Domingo to Bayahibe is possible. I have driven from maximo gomez and 27 de febrero to the airport in 15 minutes. Probably I have done Santo Domingo to San Pedro de Macoris in about 45 minutes.

I haven't driven that route since the new sections were added in San Pedro de Macoris and La Romana. I drove on the coral highway and it was good.

In the old days, to get to Bayahibe you had to drive through the town of La Romana, which had a few traffic lights. Maybe with the newly built sections of road, that part of the journey has been eliminated.

I saw two dogs at cadaques while I was there ...one belonged to the owner of the cafe

I am sure you will enjoy the Iberostar, I have always wanted to stay at one of their hotels.

Iberostar Hotels look very nice. A relative stayed at the Iberostar Grand Bavaro and probably paid close to $400US per night, her and her daughter loved the place.

I have stayed at the Catalonia in the past with a family member, so we split the cost of the room. A clean bed and room, good service, friendly other guests, nice pool and beach, meals, for what amounts to about $60US per person. Catalonia Gran Dominicus is not super fancy.

Orbitz has promo codes for vacation packages, air and hotel, that can save people money.

Good site for discount codes: http://www.retailmenot.com/

BYBYE20 promo code on Orbitz will save you 20% on hotels on Orbitz. Nice thing about the all inclusive hotel rates, they include the taxes.

Some of the guasguas are very nice. Expresso Bavaro buses from Santo Domingo to Bavaro/Punta Cana are supposedly very nice.

I don't know much more about transportation options from Santo Domingo to La Romana and Bayahibe. There are tour companies that use vans. I have seen airline personnel picked up at the airport with some of those vans.

I stayed at one of the Catalonias in Punta Cana.. ok but there was a sort of sewer smell over the whole place and the food was mediocre. Am reconsidering the Iberostar since it looks like all the restuarants except the buffet are a la carte,

My friend who is coming in wants diving so Bayahibe is the best place. And Iberstar had the best snorkelling, the reviews seemed to say but I will go back to drawing board.

You are right. It was founded by Italians. The first hotel in the area was "El Dominicus". Bayahibe beach was a beautiful beach when the only hotel there was "El Dominicus", as soon more hotels were built the beautiful beach disappeared.

The ex-vice president Carlos Morales Troncoso used to have a weekend house in the area. There used to be a clean clear water lagoon in the area where the dreams hotel is now located. It was very nice. I remember that in the early 80?s, you could go to the beach and then hit the lagoon for removing the salty water from your body.

It was nice back in the early 80?s when you could party at Abraxas discoth?que in la Romana and then about 3:00 am in the morning go to Bayahibe with your chica and friends to continue the party.

My impression was that it was a village built by Italians who love to absolutely live close together. I do not know if I am expressing it correctly, but the Village seemed to be almost "walled" with building touching building and no open spaces. (I came to the Italian observation after seeing a few villa complexes in LT where the Italians would simply concrete over spaces that others would have planted.. maybe because Italy has long since lost its tree cover?) Anyway,, the little village is ok. swarmed with tour buses to go out to the Island. And the real beach is owned by the resort.. Dominicus, i think?, with a small public access, but even at the public beach, some one has built shelters under the trees and charges 100 pesos just to sit in the shade.

I do hear that the diving is great there but for me, that would be the only reason to go. But I did not explore around the area, which might also be worth it.

Hotel cadaques is exactly what i was looking for, a borring place with almost nobody here during the week, whole beach/pool to myself!

Clean place, good looking room and didnt had a problem with staff yet. Would not recomend to anybody that doesnt have a car to get out see other places.

Finally completed the process of booking at Iberostar. Ended up with the best price at Kayak. At 30,411 DOP for four nights for two people. Which is the best rate available, matches the one on the Iberostar web page of $694.64 which only seems available to someone ELSE. As in they would not take it by phone or in the hotel or their web page... which did not work. So Kayak got the booking. Hope that it is really 4 stars which I have never tried.

I was able to get it from the savings on food and going out which I did not buy, eat, or do.. during the chiky assault,, and am READY for the beach.. or snorkeling experience since according to the papers, there may be no beach.

Now I just have to look out for the weather. We go on the 15th and have til the 12th cancell.

And, THIS I really love. Banco Progresso here called right away to see if I had made the charge since I have never made a charge that big on this card,... or maybe they just do it anyway! They always send me an email when I use their card which is great. It is an Amex card and many places do not take it so perhaps this touch of service makes up for that.

Anyway, // see... I am going to Bayahibe!

One of my friends that came to see me in Feb. returned in April and stayed at Iberostar and loved it. She's going back in Nov. She was a POP tourist for 12 years but after seeing the south she's never go north again. ;)

Have fun in Dominicus. They do have gua guas going by the front of Iberostar that will take you to Bayahibe if you want to explore for the day.

There is a website colonialtours.com, dominican,
They had iberostar hacienda at a pretty low rate early summer,
$160 p/n for 2 and a child. Great location and food. Everyones
Crazy for the dreams laromana. Dreams only works if your not
Driving and want to go out for dinner in the village.
With a car, we did the viva dominicus thru the wyndham website as
Rewards members, free vip upgrade. The resort is good for breakfast and
Lunch, but dinner sucks. We did 8 nts, for 2, kids stay free for $ 750 . With a car,
You can visit bayahibe for dinner or eat right outside, italian or seafood.

yes, I saw Colonial tours, they had a similar price to the one I booked. Not per night but per person. but I would have to send a fax of my credit card, which I did not want to do.. or direct deposit to their bank account.. stuff like that. I know that they are reputable, but I did not want a fax of my credit card lying about.

One interesting fact was that when I called the hotel, both here and in Miami, there were two different prices, one for booking here, Dominicans, and one for booking overseas.

But the DOMINICAN price was about $100 MORE!!

Is that so that the foreigners will only have to meet other foreigners?

Not crowds of Dominicans who will pile their plates full at the buffet and get drunk at the pool?

Just came back from the tour to Islans Saona, really nice place, amazing water really clear and the natural pool is really nice too.

few hint :

They start at 2500 to 2000 per person to go to island Saona, i paid 1600 p/p after talking to a few ppl, prices from hotel are ridiculous, 70-100$ p/p i heard. Include cheap alcool and food there.
For a private boat it was 5500 for the day but decide to go with a whole group.

If i can give you an advice is like I did to bring a few snacks there, alcool if you want to drink, they sell the beer and other alcool at really high price on the island, and the included rhum they give is really horrible, i bringed a whole cooler there and dont regret it.

I tryed 2 restuarants in bayahibe, one called da elio, italian place. Good food but would use this place for takeout only, horrible setup, most unconfortable chair/table ever but the pastas and pizza was good, wich is the most important.

Other place was Cafe Saona close to where the boats leaves to Island Saona, 2 mins away from playa bayahibe. Really good food, owners are from Quebec its basic food (burgers, salads, sandwich etc) but really good and cheap prices. Breakfasts are really really good

Did some searching on Trip Advisor and decided that I wanted the Iberstar.. Got some interesting prices. From the Hotel website.. as in iberostar.com.. ended up the cheapest.. 4 nights, two persons. 664. ,

Kayak, 694, Hotwire and Orbitz, 747, and Cheap Carribbean 746.

so the online dealers are not always the best!

Checked with my local cabbie who said it would be 3500 DOP to take us out there. Same to pick us up.

Think we may take the guagua out for the adventure and the call the car for the home ride so as not to lose the mellow.

Have been to the Royal Catalonia in Punta Cana and was not so thrilled. And the one in Bayahibe did not get such great reviews so thought it worth the extra bucks.. maybe. Will see.

I checked 4 nights in October on Orbitz with the byebye20, promo code, Iberostar in Dominicus was $149US per night, for two people, for 4 nights.

Some all inclusives in the DR are 50% or more cheaper, from September to the middle of December.

yes, maybe I could get a better rate but I did not want to risk it.. particularly since the hotel itself said it was going to be a higher rate for locals.

I made a mistake with the "a la carte" thing.. i thought it meant that one had to pay extra which I think occurs in some hotels. That would have left us with only the buffet to eat which is pretty boring. But I checked again on Trip Advisor and it just means "from the menu", which is, of course, what it means. Still all included.

Tripadvisor is OK, but it is not the be all and end all. I don't agree with tripadvisor's current rankings for santo domingo (or at least when I checked within the last few months). Tripadvisor had villa colonial as the number 1 hotel in santo domingo. Villa Colonial is nice, but probably wouldn't be in my top 5 for santo domingo.

Airbnb.com has some nice listings for santo domingo and elsewhere in the DR.

La Aleta, I will have to learn about, thanks for posting. Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd.

I have never been there. I was reading it from a Rough Guides edition 2002 where it stated that the government was planning to blaze a trail leading to La Aleta. If and when you get out there, post here if you learn anything about La Aleta.

Your pictures have been removed???

Thanks-)

I must say Hug You raised a good point. According to my point of view, some people carry to much cash just for their security. A thief who getting hands on your social accounts or checking your bank account can cause a lot harm then one who steal ten dollars from your wallet.
