Anyone know about the Hotel Colonial in Santiago. Going in February with my girlfriend. Posts here say different things about it--that it's a dump or that it's fine. What's the truth. Thanks.

Talked to Lazaro last week ( owners son/speaks english ). There is a new section that will be open next week. Nicer digs but a bit more than the RD630 for a room with aircon. With the Colonial you get what you pay for. Go to the Marriott for $129 plus tax a night. Big difference in price and quality. I will be at the Colonial next week for 4 nights and it is perfect for what i need. A bed, cable tv, sometimes a hot shower, aircon if needed, very few bugs, and a small fridge for my beer all for 20 bucks a night.

If you are on a TIGHT budget and don't mind budget accomodations, then the Colonial will fit your bill. If you are back-packing your way thru the DR and just want to a cheap place to crash, than the Colonial will be your spot. But many posters usually would rather pay an additional $35 a night and stay somewhere nicer and sleep in better acomodations. Somepeople could probably stay at the Lima on the corner or one of the hotels across the street for about $3 a day. To each his own

I stay there. My 3 and 7 yo stay there with me too.
It's almost a dump....but all we need...a place to sleep. Unless I'm there in the summer I dont't pay extra for AC either, not necessary.

It depends what you want. It is clean. It is dumpy. It is cheap. It is safe. It has a cerveza and a simple meal in the evening. An ideal backpacker's overnight place.

Ahh, it's not that bad.
the new place is opening at RD$1300 a night with breakfast. It is safe. That "lowlife" referred to in the above are just plain folks--not ones you'd invite home for dinner, but just folks, not to be minded.
I have put all kinds of people there. College kids, big, pushy Miami business types, ordinary good folks, and they all come away with an appreciation of a pretty good sleep and friendly folks.
And you cannot beat the price.

If you have the bread and want to pamper yourself in a cookie cutter place there is the Marriot down the road...of course you have to pay through the nose to get into town....

Or the Gran Almirante....

I've used the Colonial since they opened in the 90s. The "deluxe" wing is fine. The owners include former New Yorkers. The area is genuine Dominican.

The neighborhood is similar to the old Les Halles in Paris. If you spend $$ at the Aloha Sol in the center (good restaurant) you'll still have to walk all the way down to 30 Marzo for decent Cuban sandwiches and beer that can be had at the panaderias there. Why spend more? Why walk?

Depends on your expectations. I stayed there a while back when the rate equated to about 9 bucks a night. The hotel I payed $50 a night in SD was slightly better and it was 5 star compared to the place I stayed in Cabarete for 25 a night (very cheap trip). It was good enough but I most definitely needed the AC in August. The AC didn't work in the first room I had and I changed it because it was brutal.
