Richard - Is Sur Caribe new? I have never heard of it! Or is it apartment type residencia that is off the main street - near the apartments owned by the Cemex? If you stayed in Pedernales for a few weeks, it is easy to get involved with some of the local volunteer groups such as PLAN, lots of projects on the environment and working on Dominican-Haitian issues. Far easier to integrate into that work than elsewhere in the country.

D'Oleo Mendez

some additional information:

Hostal Restaurant D?Oleo Mendez (Calle Antonio Duverge 9, ☎ 809-524-0416) $. Across the street from Do?a Chava, this hostal?s rooms are a little more expensive and a little more comfortable, with cable TV and nice tiled bathrooms. The restaurant is excellent for lunch and dinner, though the breakfast is better at Do?a Chava. And the D?Oleo Mendez trails in level of service and character as well. But if Do?a Chava is full, this makes a perfectly decent alternative.

All of the rooms in D'Oleo Mendez are air conditioned and the restaurant is THE place to meet and greet in town. I have found the service to be excellent - the fresh pitchers of limade are the BEST I have ever had and perfect for thirst and one of the owners is Spanish and really does up the kitchen - great fresh fish and VEGETABLES fresh from the market. And - BTW- the hotel is for sale as the owners want to retire to their smaller place across the street - so for anyone who is looking for an investment - this might be it. Be aware though that there is essentially NO expat community in Pedernales - unless you count the Haitians! But you do get a fairly steady stream of Capitalenos tourists, and NGO types.

Just to note that Pedernales beach is gorgeous and usually empty but rocky and it is the ONLY place in the country where I have ever been stung by jelly fish. But when I am tired of the City - it is where I go in my mind - to sit underneath that tree, on that rocky beach, near the fishing boats.

(Oh DRAT!- now I have told you all about it and will have to find another place!)

Besides Bah?a de las ?guilas, Hoyo de Pelempito and the public beach (and possibly the Haitian border) what's there to do or see in Pedernales?

mountainannie: You mean that Do?a Chava and D'Oleo M?ndez are owned by the same people?

Thank you all for the excellent information - we hope to make use of it sometime soon. It is so pleasant to read a sane, informative thread without the usual nonsense.

Those are the things that make this an amazing town. At night you can sit in the plaza with a beer or any beverage and noone bothers you. Not even a limpia bota is to be seen.

It has a perfectly fishing village feel to it and calming effect. But for sure you can spend 3-4 days easy and not get bored if you don't rush it. The beaches are the best, nearby Cabo Rojo (just outside of Bahia) has the most amazing deserted beach if you're looking for a romantic picnic.

No - two different couples. The Dominican Spanish couple who own D'Oleo Mendez have a smaller place across the street which they may open when they retire... sorry for any confusion

Hi Marilyn,

If your stay in Perdenales for a month you probably go nuts. But if you're visiting, that quietude and tranquility, is just the mental and physical medicine one needs.
This is still one of those old-times Dominican towns of years past.
People gather in the plaza on the weekends for a few hours, then go home. Others stay later in their tables drinking their beers and listening to music. Real nice and easy.

Richard, that was when I was 15!!! I wouldn't go for more than a day or two now.

I recently stayed in D'Oleo Mendez and found it both very nice and economical, very nice menu, right in town but away from the main avenue.

I recommend.
