This hotel also has guards who patrol the grounds at night. Neither of them admits to have noticed anything.

I am sorry for the misfortunes you had.

It is true Europa has guards but I have only seen them sit in the chair at the entrance.

You should really take a look at The Waterfront Hotel. It is a gated hotel where the guards actually walk the grounds at night. You also do not have the bad element in close proximity as the Europa does.

Nomad this might also be good for you and your wife as they have a very nice pool and the ocean is a 100 meters from your room door.

Europa has been and still is, in my opinion, not a place to stay.

Can I ask which appartment number you had ? If you don't remember, or want to say, was your appt. innside the hallway, or was it around the pool ?
Sorry if I seems too curious, but I'm very interessted in the case for personal reasons.

No problem ask me anything you want. It was room no. 3 and abt. 1,5 meter to the pool from the doorstep. Actually an ideal place to have the room and take a morning swim.

Ok. Thanks. I have no reason to not belive you. However I think this is an extraordinary case. I'm 100% sure this is not a commen inncident here.
The people that lives at the guesthouse is a mix of about 50% long time ressidents and 50% short time (1 to 2 weeks) vacationers. I have never heard about something like this going on here, or experienced anything simular myself. I also just have had to friends vissiting for a month, they had a studio each, one in the hallway, and the other one in number 2, besides yours. Either of them had no problems, and both have decided to book again for their next vacation.
Once again, i belive your story, but are you sure that you didn't left either the door, or the glass sliding wall unloced ?
I'm sorry for all your problems, and your loss, but I hope the story don't scare too many away, because it's a nice and reasonable place to stay in Sosua.

For the sake of the hotel I really hope this was a one time case and won't happen again. We never opened the glass sliding wall and the door was locked.

I also think that maybe the person who did this have learnt something or suffers from a bad consience because he/she decided to return the passport.

Yes I'm sure it was an isolatet incident. Ofcourse that isn't making your situation any better.
I would also like to point out that the guesthouse, or Conominium Plaza Sosua II, which is the real name, is not a part of Hotel Europa. All appartments are privately owned, allthough the owner of Hotel Euriopa owns some of them. The hotel just runs an outrental service for the appt. owners.

I've stayed at Europa several times with no problem other than the rotten attitude of the Swiss/German gal who is at the front desk occasionally. Maybe it's a cultural thing as I'm a US Southern Boy.

I once left an expensive item by accident in my Europa room before I checked out. 2 months later I was back and stayed there again. I casually asked the desk clerk about the item, and lo and behold they still had it in the lost and found.

I also travel with one of these now:

Travel Room Alarm

Cheap and effective. Would have prevented the theft/break-in at the Europa.

FWIW-I don't go to SoSewer much anymore beyond a day trip. When I used to fly into PoP in my plane, I chose Field of Dreams across from Playa Dorado.

My husband went to talk to the manager about the claims and the manager got very very angry. The manager threw my husband out of the reception and told the watchman to shoot him!! The watchman loaded his gun, but luckily the bullets fell on the Flor. Now we jumped into the car and went to get some friends to "protect" us and help us get our things from the room. All this happened late in the evening and before we had got our things it was in the middle of the night. ....and we had nowhere to go.
Is the manager of the apartments the same person that manages (owns) the Hotel?

As best as I know, Diego has a female assistant/manager, so I presume the OP was refering to Diego himself.

Cheap alarm

Sorry to hear about your problems at the Europa. I had a similar problem at another hotel but luckily I woke up, escorted the chica out to security and let them take care of her.

After that I went to Playero, bought a tin cup for a couple of dollars and just prop it up against my door when I go to sleep, trust me it will wake the dead on a tile floor.

I return on the 6th. Will ask around a little. I have heard that prices have gone up about 8 dollars a night. I have never had a problem with either of the German ladies. The taller one used to be my wife's neighbour in Cabarete. The other one it took a little while to get to know, but we are friends now.

A good question. First time I stayed in the apartment side all the glass doors were unlocked. Was the same at another hotel I stayed. The first time (not at the Europa) I was in Sosua, I did not check the sliding glass door. I was awakened by a protitute peeking into my room and wishing me "Good Morning".

The Dominican alarm.

For many years, I propped a frying pan up above my door, by way of sticking the thin handle end in the crack above the door, and even a jiggle would have it go tumbling, and let me tell you that when that metal frying pan (not the cast iron ones) would hit the floor from 7 feet in the air, crashing onto the ceramic tiles, you would wake up 3 feet in the air above your bed.
It did go crashing a few times, and all I ever saw was a few fleeting glances of someone running away, probably with soiled underwear.
Nobody ever got in while I was in the house. and had my "Dominican Alarm" set up.

I stayed at studio number 2 for three weeks in the Europa guest house at Xmas 2005. While I was there I heard the same story, one of the rooms in the hallway was burgled at night with the guy sleeping in it! Mobile and camera, I think, were stolen. Not sure about the details but I think I was told the guy didn't lock the door from the inside (in the guest house you MUST double-lock the door from the inside and take the key OUT).

So I didn't give it too much thoughts - some guys also bring in girls at night so you never know exactly who took what !?!? I think on the first day I read at the back of the door that if you don't lock this door at all times the management don't take any responsibility for loss and so on..., although it sounds like it doesn't make any difference anyway !

In any case you must ALWAYS put valuables in the safe (if there is one). These seem to be opportunistic thefts (by probably someone from the inside) so don't give them the opportunity (leave valuables on the table they can see from the window etc.). The A/C is so load in there I can see how one might not wake up easily at night!

Most unfortunate, but it sounds like the OP still had an enjoyable holiday afterwards, which is very good. Generally, staff were friendly there and it was very quite with low-key long term guests. I hear Diego (and some other owners) is selling most of his condos to Russians. New owners are apparantly are not into renting, so I guess there won't be many more rental condos there.

Just got to be careful in Europa, with the huge volume of guests, girls and so on coming and going I wouldn't right it off due to a couple of incidents.
