I have met the owner. And we have common friends. I will make some calls and try to get you the number of the hotel.

Hi, is this hotel in Concepcion de la Vega? Are there any other hotels or B&Bs in this town? Would like to stay there for one night in february, on the way from Puerto Plata to Santo Domingo and cant find anything about the accomodation.

Also, can I use the Caribe coach service between Puerto Plata and C de la Vega, and C de la Vega and Santo Domingo?
Thanx

Concepcion de La Vega is the long name. Everyone uses the short name, La Vega.

Other than the caba?as (motels) on the autopista, Hotel Rey is the only decent place to stay in town. You can take Caribe Tours to La Vega and then take a taxi (8 minute ride) to Hotel Rey, which is located near the center of town. From La Vega, you have various choices for getting to Santo Domingo, including Caribe Tours.

All the other places I have encountered in La Vega are dumps-I would rather sleep outside by the church next to Helados Bon than stay anywhere else besides the Rey.

Be aware that you may have transportation issues going to POP and the capital from La Vega.

If the bus is full going in either direction they will not bother to stop in La Vega. I had to take two different Caribe buses to get to POP-one from La Vega to Santiago and another from Santiago to POP.

When I got to Santiago I was lucky to get on the bus going to POP as there were only 2 seats. One lady could not get on because she was travelling with her 2 daughters and there was no room. Even though the daughters promised to take up only one seat, they were not allowed on the bus.

I would plan your trips and buy the bus tickets ahead of time and don't count on the express buses stopping in La Vega if they are full, because they won't.

And when you do get on a bus and its crowded, keep in mind that dominicans think nothing of stepping right in front of you to get on, so be aggressive and don't let anyone cut in front of you.

Oh, sounds a bit tricky with Caribe, can one book the caribe tickets in advance (website or by phone) then?

How much would it roughly cost to get a taxi to Santo Domingo for 2people?

Also, is it easy to find a taxi within La Vega if I want to visit Santo Cerro y vega Vieja? (and for Santo Domingo journey)?

Too many questions, I know- just too little time for DR and want to see everything :)

You can call a taxi from the hotel, but to go to those 2 places may be tricky. When I went I had friends drive me around. Those trips by taxi may wind up costing you an arm and a leg.

Try to find out if there are any tours offered from Santiago or even from La Vega itself to those places you want to visit. Just ask at the front desk when you get to the hotel.

Of course you can get a taxi to take you to Santo Domingo, but this will also cost you plenty. See if you can take a bus first. You can go to the Caribe Tours stop and ask how far in advance you can buy the ticket you need and how best to get to Santo Domingo. It may be better to get to Santiago and then head back down on the express bus.

No problems

In a worst case scenario, just buy a ticket from La Vega to Santiago on Caribe Express and, once in Santiago, buy a ticket from Santiago to Puerto Plata. Plenty of capacity (excepting Christmas and Easter) on both routes.

As for tours, you can ask in the hotel for a reliable taxi. I would think US$40 would get you to both sites and back. May not find anyone who speaks English, though.

Taxi from SDO to LA Vega would probably be US$100.

Forget about a taxi to get from La Vega to SD. There are plenty of better choices, including Expreso Vegano (buses similar to Caribe) which is actually closer to the hotel than Caribe Tours.

Sorry, but I don't know of any public transportation to Santo Cerro, but as others have suggested, try asking at the front desk.

thanx for your suggestions, expreso vegano seems like a good tip, going there end january to mid february, so will avoid both crowded Xmas and Easter! thanks again....

You will be happy with the people, especially in La Vega and the surrounding areas. Don't forget, if possible, to take a tour of the Mirabal sisters' house. They won't let you take photos in the house but the guided tour is informative.

Very interesting to see how they lived back in those days.

if you are not going to the Carnival.....I dont know what you would see in LaVega.

I have gone many times, but only because i have friends that live there..

so if wasnt for the carnival or friends Id only go to LaVega as I passed through on my way to Santo Domingo and points east and south.
