In Sosua, you can check out this website from Banker Trust.
Mail Service in the Dominican Republic

Also, there is a post office in Puerto Plata, it is near the central park. Last year I sent a box (30 pounds) from the US and a friend had to wait a month and also had to pay 1500 pesos to receive the package. One thing for sure though, it is best to have the name and phone number attached to the shipping label. I think they now have a website for mail service in DR.

Thanks DRExplorer! I have checked out the website!

To answer the question, yes there is a postal service in the DR, however, it does not function as it should. Do not trust your recipient is going to receive a letter, post card or a parcel in a short period of time. You must use a private mailing service as EPS or they're others that service the area, a simple search in the forum will give you some contact information you can follow. Depending where you're in the US you can ship to Miami or NY then have the package send to PP.

One of the benefits of retiring in the DR is that mail boxes are not existent, which means no bills will reach you in here :)

Wow, this confirms the info I found during my research. Mailing items from the US to the DR doesn't seem to be a viable option. From what I am able to gather after all things considered, its going to cost like $140(US) to send a $30 package of medicine. That may not get delivered. Ever. If it does get delivered it will definitely be too late.

Thanks to all who replied with positive remarks and advice. I have found the answer to the question I asked about how the mail and parcel services work in the DR.

Oh and thanks again Uglystorm for answering about mailboxes and bills. But one thing, How do the locals get billed for and pay for utilities?

Funny YOU would say such a thing. Now Mr. Colon, you did claim to read all of my post. So YOU know that. NOT one of them EVER said anything about sex, prostitution, pornography etc. All of MY words spoke of charity and love for the poor locals of the DR. Now in this thread here, YOU profess to be a world traveler and have slept with hookers from the DR, Thailand, Phillipines, Mexico, Hongkong, Taipe, Vietnam, Singapore, (and you got the nerve to say that I'M the one who's wanking off to porno????? Geesh man! You are disgusting......) "yes I get the message" Loud and Clear!! The message is that you my friend are a sad sad soul. This behavioral trait was probably passed down from your father. He too traveled the world screwing everything that walked. One day he met a dog...9 months later, here comes chris colon... That makes you the son of a???

This DR Love, I don't pretend to understand CCCCCCCCCCCCCCC, or his innane posts, but I convinced that he is not worth the time of day.

If he gets his rocks off by insulting others, and there is no one connected to DR1 is willing to take a stand against such abusive behavior, there is not much you can do about, except to ignore him and hope he goes away.

Believe it or not, there are many good people on the forum, and they are, for the most part, soft-spoken and polite. Many actually contribute some worthwhile information, from time to time.

In response to your original post: Do not use the Dominican postal system. It SUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKS!!!!!!

Most of the companies have their own delivery system. Banks, Cable, Electric, Telephone all have their own delivery people. Plus in all cases as you know your getting billed, its your responsibility to get it paid even if you don't receive the bill.

Thanks BA

Each service has its own delivery service, as bienamor has said, it is your responsibility to pay for the services. We usually visit the phone, cable and banks to make the monthly payments, otherwise you will notice when your cable goes out :)

To ship parcels or even envelops I use EPS and Taino Express from Miami. There others that have offices in Puerto Plata that can deliver the box for you. Their rates are anything from US$1 a pound to anything closer to US$2, it depends the service you use. These companies have offices located in town, they call the local recipient and advise when the parcel is read to be pick up. UPS, DHL and Fedex also service these areas, but they're rather expensive.

i am really pi$$ed of at the moment because of the US post office and a whole bunch of anti smoking nazi's. the US post office will no longer mail cigarettes, i have a daughter in north carolina that used to like to send poor old dad a gift on his birthday, but noooo! some state govt. is going to lose some tax. i used to get a couple of cartons mailed to me from the DR as a gift once in a while, now the dominican post office will no longer accept cigarettes............i do not care if your kid smells some second hand smoke, i don't care if you're allergic, go outside and keep your illegitimate brat away from me. you are more than happy to collect all the damn taxes i pay, and i bet you're about 50+ pounds overweight, go eat some granola.........P.S. your perfume stinks and gives me asthma................the dominican PO used to be very reliable getting me my smokes though, usually one week but they had to be taken to the main PO in SD........

i would just like to report that here in Santo Domingo, I get regular mail delivery both letters and magazines and deliveries from Amazon .... right to my door... right up the three flights.

Now I know that things do not work so well out in the other towns...

but the letters that i have sent to England and the US all have arrived within two weeks....

I also shipped a couple of boxes of stuff before I arrived here... and they arrived within a couple of months.

Did want you to know that at least the mail gets through in the Capital

Or at least in Gazcue!!

I gave up waiting for the pictures of my grandson that were sent to a PO box at the end of El Conde. Only 6 years ago. I have another friend that receives his regularly at the same building. Some are lucky and some are not. I will continue to rely on EPS for my blood thinner pills.
