How many of you have a pilots license, can you get it in DR?

I'm in! It would be great to get more involved with like minded aviators in the DR. I share the C172 with my Dad (AKA Wrecksum) We are based in POP. We also have a friend who is a retired airline pilot who also want's his own plane.

I suppose that the most expensive thing about aircraft ownership is the maintenance. For us that's not an issue. I am a professional aircraft maintenance engineer. Although I mainly use my European maintenance license for work, I also hold FAA A&P with IA so I can do annuals on N reg as well. We also have experience in buying aircraft from the US and bringing them here if anyone wants any advice.

I'm trying to set up a small maintenance organization in POP, have a look at my website Puerto Plata - POP - MDPP - Dominican Republic

One day I would like to build some hangars at POP. But maybe that's just a pipe dream at the moment.
I'd "like" thispost 3 or 4 times if I could...

I'm a commercial multi IR but here I'm just a private pilot.

In my asking around, those foreigners who have tried to set up some sort of flying business here (without serious clout) in the DR seem to be faced with many hurdles, practically unsurmountable, plus the fact that the remuneration is very poor by comparison for most local aviation personnel.

If the aircraft is HI registered, then you would need a DR pilot's licence or validation to fly. Professionally,I would imagine a full DR commercial or ATP would be required, but as I did have a gringo friend flying commercially here a few years ago, I don't think full citizenship is necessary.
Training would be much cheaper and more reliable in the USA and with the present economic situation, it should be possible to negotiate a price with a flight school.

I would like to get in touch with a current FAA CFI here if anyone could help?
