Poor you :cheeky:

Becoming a citizen of any country cost a lot of money. If you don't have a least $675.00 for the process, you should look for a job.

I am looking for a job, but 150 for a stupid stamp is ridiculous, and if you actually payed 675 dollars for citizenship then you got ripped off.

So here is how it goes, forget the stupid embassy or consulate, it can be done for like one dollar at the secretary of state. Now I need to translate and notarize it for like between 1000-2000 pesos and then do the other stuff in the capital I believe, they don't do it here in santiago from what I've been told.

!WHY!

Why would you want to have DR citizenship, if you have either american, canadian or other 1st world country citizenship?

Why not? life is not so stressful here, I want to work here, I can study here, I have a life here now and I need my citizenship. I can own land here, grow mangos, avocados, orange, plantains, bananas, and other stuff. Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What 150 dollar stamp you keep talking about? I did mine recently and there was no such thing.

The birth certificate needs to be legalized, apostille certified, or whatever it's called at a dominican embassy or consulate in the united states. before it could be done in the DR but not anymore. I got mine done at the secretary of state for one dollar.

Just got my Dominican Papers on Friday April 1, 2011

Here's the process as I just did it myself starting December 17, 2010:

1. Get your American birth certificate apostilled. this means you pay $10 US for yoiur birth certificate and then have that state apostilled it for $1.00US. Yes $1 only. Have it sent to you in the DR as I had mine sent federal express for $25US. Now you have paid $36US.
2. Get your apostilled birth certificate translated in spanish I paid $200 pesos. if you email me I can give you a great person here in Santiago who can do it for you and she speaks english.
3. type a letter in spanish saying you humbly request your dominican birth right and you would like it to be recognized in whatever sity you prefer.
4. Enclose the letter, yoiur translated and apostilled birth certificate, a copy of 1 one your parents birth certificate and copy of his/her cedula along with acopy of your id or passport. take all of this to the Junta central electoral in santo domingo. they will receive the documents and tell you to come back in 2 weeks. Well I sent someone every thrusday for exactly 85 days 2 and 1/2 months until I got it on thursday Marh 31.
5. Take that packet of documents they give back to you and go to your local voting district. mine was at the 4th disctrict in santiago at the Juacalito (something like that).
6. Give that packet to them and ask for a birth certificate for an intended purcpose, i.e. getting my cedula, getting my drivers license, passport. I paid $600 pesos to get all three. they gave me a receipt saying to come pack on April 15, 2011 to retrieve my birth certificates. the reason it takes so long is because they have to write my into a physical book and then print the birth certificates. If you only need 1 birth certificate it is only $400 pesos. therefore a grand total of $46 US Dollars which is not so bad.
7. take the birth certificate to the Junta central in your city and request your cedula which they give you a temporary one until the real one is printed in 30 days.

I hope this helps.

as to why file for your birth right Dominican Birth certifcate

I have travelled already 6 times this year $60 visa fee and would have saved already $12 US. that buys me 7 beers which make a pretty good weekend at the beach and at least I enjoy the beer and don't hand that money over freely to the government. Also it makes getting a bank account, cell phone account, home phone and cable account, and health insurance much easier here. I am so tired of prepaid phone cards!;)

So if you got yours done for $1, what makes you think s/he needs to go to the DOM Embassy / Consulate? The Hague Convention is still in existence, you know. She, too, can avoid the authentication at the consulate by visiting her Secretary of State.

I have a job and there's no way I'd waste that much money when I can get it done cheaper. I'd rather spend my money on something else

On a related subject, I had a Domincan friend tell me the other day that due to me living here for so many years, and being married to a Dominican for an extended period of time, that I automatically qualify for Dominican Citizenship (and passport)

To be honest, I have done "zero" investigation or searches on this. Has anyone else here heard of this??
Interesting...
Would that work for us (foreifner men married to Dominican ladies) ?
Please post some more once you get insights...

You are eligible, but you still have to go through a bureaucratic process, including a brief exam about your knowledge of the DR.

Oops I forgot to follow up on this thread so here it goes:
I went to the Junta in Santiago and was told it is taking 3 months to receive your actual plastic cedula card. They issue you a piece of paper which has an internal identification # on it but that is not your official cedula # therefore you are stuck waiting. Well I got lucky because there was acutally a friendly lady working that day who told me that I can request and expedited cedula to be issued if I go the santo domingo and file it at the Junta Central. I called them before going to santo domingo and was told the exact procedure to follow to be able to receive it within 3 business days. There are 3 conditions in which to qualify; 1) you have a return flight home within 1 week 2) you are here for medical purposes and have an emergency medical note from a local doctor 3) you have an employment letter/offer. I happened to need my cedula so that I can begin work so I had an employment offer. I took it to the Junta Central and within 30 minutes I was in and out. These are things they are not forthcoming with but I guess the Junta God was watching out for me that day. BTW I paid $0 for this expedited service and only was out of pocket my gas money. If anyone has questions send me a note and I can give you the phone numbers to call. You do not have to return to santo domingo to pick up your cedula as they send it to your local office and you go there to pick it up as I did in santiago.
