Also, in tourist areas it's normal to locals assume all "whites" are gringos, but they even do that to white Dominicans too.

But sometimes, it is not about the way you "look" (that's what I was referring to in my post).
It is the way you dress, carry yourself, your hand gestures, etc.....

As you can see I'm fairly white but have met many Dominicans with my same color. We also have a lot of Spaniards here in Santiago especially from Galecia for whatever reason, according to a friend of mine. Apparently Galeciuans have a distinctive accent which my buddy loves to imitate.

Not exactly. I have been asked if I am Dominican many times in my 5 years here and have even been mistaken as a mototconcho. Not only that Dominicans are very accepting of foreigners if they learn to speak the language and act accordingly. Dominicans are proud of their country in spite of it all and are typically interested to find out if foreigners like their country and if they do and can speak the language they are typically visibly pleased.

Exactly. I have been mistaken for a Dominican York as well. I don't think that Dominicans can instantly tell you are not a local.

From what I've seen on the news the homicides that happen in the DR typically occur in the bad parts of town and mostly at night. Also, there seems to be a significant portion due to conflict between businesses and business cartels, like the transportation mafia or drug running. There are also random acts due to robberies and these do occur even in the middle of the day. In the latter case there is not a whole lot one can do but pray but fortunately these aren't so commonplace. With regard to fitting in sometimes I think it is an advantage to look foreign as it may make the robber think twice as he will know he be pursued more vigilantly by the police in order to make an example of him and more than likely when they find him he'll never make it to jail.

Dobar dan!!!
When walking home, I always look to see who is around the street. If I see someone I don't know, I will go back around the block and find another way. I always try to change my route and if, IF somebody is trailing, (oprostite Milos) I will run just a little bit just to see if anybody is following me. I like to walk, I love it here, since the distances are so short compared to Miami. I will put most of my money in the socks of my pants. When I first came back I asked a lot of questions concerning addresses, and stuff so people would ask me where was I from. I would say, Montecristi and that I had just moved to La capital.

Also. Never Run. Please don't listen to this person.
If you run, in any mammal will trigger to catch you. (Bear example, or dog catching tire of car).

Yeah, right. I had a dog get run over chasing car tires. That's the whole point of running. You get to choose the terms of combat if pursued.

Sun Tzu's take on martial combat:

"When ten to one, surround them"
"When five to one, attack them"
"When two to one, do battle with them"
"When matched, divide them"
"When insufficient, avoid them"

The same rules that apply to commanding armies apply to individual combat and if retreating to a more suitable location or disappearing into a crowd are not options and you are not willing to yield groud then at some point, defeat is almost assured.

Real life is not some martial arts demo with accomplises clumsily flailing at you with rubber knives:

Why Do Black Belt Martial Artists Get Beat Up By Street Fighters?

Keep it real. Listen to "this person", OP. Aikido won't stop a bullet!

Chasing Tires

My friend had a doberman - 2 actually - when the school bus came those dogs attacked the tires..... flattened them regularly

The school bus company instructed my friend to take his children to the neighbor's house

No more stops for him:chinese:

Sometimes, the dog wins the tire fight ;)

Sorry yours didn't

She was a Cocker Spaniel so she was cursed with short legs and unlike the school bus, the car that hit her didn't have to stop in front of our house.
