Hi again everyone,
I want to thank each and every one of you that responded to my post. I have no idea how hurricaines work and I appreciate the definitions of a surge. Now I have a great understanding of what is going on. I appreciate your time to help me and to give me advice. I have a much better feeling coming to Punta Cana on Sunday as I am looking so forward to visiting. Thanks once again and I'll be watching the weather updates as Dean moves closer and hopefully away from all you nice people.

Storm Surge

From FEMA: "The greatest potential for loss of life related to a hurricane is from the storm surge!

"Storm surge is simply water that is pushed toward the shore by the force of the winds swirling around the storm. This advancing surge combines with the normal tides to create the hurricane storm tide, which can increase the mean water level to heights impacting roads, homes and other critical infrastructure. In addition, wind driven waves are superimposed on the storm tide. This rise in water level can cause severe flooding in coastal areas, particularly when the storm tide coincides with the normal high tides.

"The storm surge combined with wave action can cause extensive damage, severely erode beaches and coastal highways. With major storm like Katrina, Camille, and Hugo, complete devastation of coastal communities occurred. Many buildings withstand hurricane force winds until their foundations, undermined by erosion, are weakened and fail."

ATTENTION FOLKS: The most important thing to have on hand is water. Drinking water.

Everything else is a plus.
We'll have a wet Saturday, and maybe Sunday. Monday will be nice.

IF there is an important storm surge, which I don't think will occur--waves of above normal yes, a 15 or 20 foot surge no--again IMO--be sure to have an escape route worked out if you want to leave your beach front property....But I really don't think it will come to that.

Remember a couple of years ago? That nice lady in La Romana put up photos of her front yard and the waves splashing up and into the yard?? That was a storm much closer than Dean...

Rest easy, be prepared, enjoy the cooler weather....

Oh yes, I plan to be in Santo Domingo from the 23rd on....

I know, I have personal hurricane experience in Barahona, Bahoruco especifically and it's not nice. I hope my Bahoruco people weather this storm without much difficulty, but they have plenty of experience with these types of storms.

Our Dominican channel 23 here in Sosua, just interviewed the DR weather experts, and they say that Dean will give us precipitation and fairly strong winds in the South, but never attaining more than tropical storm levels.

Indeed! It reached Cat 4 as it was passing by the Virgin Islands.
Track is still holding. Speed is a little slower but still motoring along at 19 miles an hour.
More strengthening is projected for the next 24 hours.
Windfields are increasing dramatically.
Center is just entering the area due south of Puerto Rico.
I cannot show you interactively, but I have an on-line system to the NHS data sources that updates every half an hour and does all kinds of fancy tracking and modelling and stuff - visibly I can see those windfields growing larger on the tracking maps each time an update is downloaded.

Awesome, humbling and astounding all in the same moment!

I've never seen a storm hold to such a solid track. My tracking software just about shows it motoring along in a straight line! May we all be safe tomorrow and may the heavens help Jamaica and those others in the path of this storm. Can one evacuate a complete Island? (Rhetorical question!)

You are doing a wonderful job Chris for which we are all grateful (and of course a few of your experienced friends too) - hope you got some sleep earlier as doubt you are going to get much in the next 24 hours....

What part is Barahona by (SD/PC)? I have been watching this forum and The Weather Channel here from the USA. The storm is unbelievable as it is gaining strength. I have never been in a forum like this, may I ask if all of you do this just to help out fellow Dominicans and tourists to provide information? I think all of you are doing an amazing job and I thank you.

Allie, I am 56 years old and moved to DR from the UK last June and this is my first experience ever of anything like a hurricane so I have been a little nervous to say the least but yes, you are right, the good guys on this forum are helpful, committed and genuine.

LOL, no, tried but I could not sleep. But I'm going to have some rest now until the 2pm interim advisories. Thank-you for your kind words! Lots of help and lots of advice from the experienced fellows here on DR1 as well! Had a busy busy pm box today :classic: This community is special!

Formal Warnings and Watches

Hurricane Warning is issued for the SouthWestern Peninsula of Haiti from the Haiti/Dominican Republic Border to Port-Au-Prince

Tropical Storm Warning from Port-Au-Prince to the Northern Haiti/Dominican Republic Border.

Hurricane Warning for the South Coast of the Dominican Republic from Barahona Westward to the Haiti-Dominican Republic Border.

Tropical Storm Warning is in effect along the South Coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano Westward to Barahona.

A Hurricane Warning means that hurricane conditions are expected within the warning area within the next 24 hours. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.

And of course, Jamaica is bracing, boarding up, going underground and doing what they can to rush preparations to protect life and property.

Oh yes, before I forget .. for the newbies on the board. I don't think it will be a good beach day tomorrow. Better find something else to do and for heavens sake, don't go crawling around on the rocks to 'watch the storm go by'. :cheeky:

Forward Speed ?

Hello everybody,
Why has the forward speed decreased ?, is that due to internal reconfiguration or high level winds ?, increased H2O temp ?. Is that bothersome to anyone ?.

Thank you Chris for your updates and seemingly nonstop invaluable info !!.

I wish A safe day tomarow for everybody on the south coast, Haiti, Jamaica and beyond.

Juan Dolio on the south coast (in case you don't know where it is) is all quiet - spookily so. No wind at all (normally some wind at night) sea flat as a pancake, see what happens in the morning!!!
