Juan Dolio on the south coast (in case you don't know where it is) is all quiet - spookily so. No wind at all (normally some wind at night) sea flat as a pancake, see what happens in the morning!!!

Does it feel like the wind has been 'sucked out'? That's been our experience with previous hurricanes, the 'calm before the storm' etc but I believe that 'sucking out' extends over a much wider area than will be affected by the storm. Here in Puerto Plata we have normal light breeze (normal for a calm night, not spookily windless).

Observation from the Frontier!

Hola mi amigos,

Just after midnight Saturday morning, slight rain falling and very little wind. Stars still out over the Barahruco Mountains but dark off to the east.

For those not familar with the Larimar Coast, the layout from just outside Barahona to Isla Beata is almost directly North to South. This puts our coast line on a direct East bearing.

Storm surge is not usually a major problem even on our larger beaches because of the water depth which can be up to 20 meters right off the shore. We have 200 meter water within 2km of shore and 1000 meter depths as close as 3km from shore. These depths tend to keep the surges down and then our coast is also comprised of mostly 50 + high bluffs. So the wind is our worse enemy when these things come a calling.

As time and power allows will send out an update every now and then, especially if things get interesting.

Thanks kfrancis. For those that are still awake, doppler from Puerto Rico ..
They reported the same still feeling in the air with little rain. The rains are now strengthening. Mean Dean is now measured at 145 miles per hour. Good God! Can you imagine.
El Tiempo en Puerto Rico Weather

Hey, you didn't get much sleep, did you? I am still up because I am interested and fascinated at the same time but also relieved that I am not closer to the eye of the storm as it is performing atm. That link screamed at me (on the computer) and couldn't really see what was going on.... is there another version?

Storm loop 4:30 AM

Caribbean Water Vapor Imagery - Satellite Services Division

If all remains the same, the South coast of the DR would expect similar conditions that Puerto Rico is experiencing. (Barahona excepted).

For those who cannot load the loop, here are the pix in sequence.

OK, changes.
The track has shifted another +- 15 miles to the south (good for us)
The storm has slowed down slightly to 17 miles per hour
Hurricane hunters measured 177miles per hour in the Northern Eyewall of Dean but the storm is not yet upgraded to a Category 5
Mean Dean is strengthening again.
With the new speed, it looks like a good 100 miles away from the Pedernales Peninsula at around 11pm tonight.
I've not seen any reports in from Puerto Rico.
Thanks Rocky!

Observation from the Frontier!

6am in Cabral. No rain and no wind. Really quite this morning even the village dogs are not up to their usual sunrise antics. Roosters are up and about though.

Off to take the compound dogs to the park for their morning inspection and meeting with the cleaning ladies. Every morning there is someone sweeping up the cups and such from the park party the night before.

later,

Thank you all for your insight. This is my first time writing.

My girlfriend is coming to the US on Monday for the first time. She lives in Arollo Hondo, Santo Domingo; and must be on a flight out of Airport Las Americas at 2 PM. The taxi taking her is a jeep. I have advised to be at airport at 10 AM because there might be a significant number of people with lost flights.
1. Do you anticipate lost flights Saturday and Sunday? Monday, too???
2. Will there be flooding in Santo Domingo and will it keep her from getting to the airport?
3. If it takes 1 hour to get to airport, how long should she plan to be there?

Thanks in advance for your help.
P.S. - My name is Dennis and hurricane is Dean (almost a sign from God if she can't catch the flight).

By Monday, the storm will be well past her.
As for flooding, you will know before she leaves, and if additional time is needed to get to the airport, she will know it once the storm has passed.

All seems to be so nice and quiet
No Wind 27c
Nice sunshine
Slight cloud coverage over the whole sky
The sea looks like a mirror
except when the waves hit our new beach, go over the ridge and put a lot of trash there
than we know that the water level raised already 1 meter of more

Punta Cana on August 19 ???

Hola my online familia,

I'm a newbie to this and have been following it diligently for the last3 days and my hats off to all of you ( too many names but you know that i mean ALL OF YOU) for doing such a wonderful job on keeping us all in the loop.

My family and I are travelling to Punta Cana tomorrow morning and we should be arriving at PUJ for 2pm. What is it going to be like at that time?? My Dad is havinga fit and so worried scared. Our flight is still on schedule. My cousin went the extra mile and contacted the DR consulate here in Toronto and was assured that Punta Cana would be fine and there was nothing to worry about.

My mind is going to be on you guys the whole day adn the funny part, we have a family wedding with mass beginning at noon today adn then the reception tonight. Yikes.. i should be having fun there but will be wondering whats going on over here. If there is any more info, please let me know.

My prayers are with you all of you as well as with the rest of the Caribbean.

Michelle xo
