Generally the people with the most interest in protecting the marine environment are fishermen.

Bingo! Ditto the hunters.

Living on an island as I do, we're surrounded by salt-water fisherman all year long. About the only complaint I have is that they often leave a lot of garbage behind, which could be alleviated if there were more trash receptacles available.

A lot are catch-and-release fishermen like pedrochemical and my son-in-law, but a lot more are like my husband, who enjoy eating what they catch.

A lot wrong in this thread

First with the stating it was 2' - two foot?? maybe a sandshark but a SHARK, nah.

And yes a fresh caught grilled Shark steak is Muy Delicioso.

Fisherman being the most marine eco protectors - my experience and its widespread is NO, like someone else said garbage left behind and its not the fault of no trash cans, you can carry out what you carry in. Just like every other group, there's good and bad...

And as to catch and release, I find that along the lines of torture. I don't get it. Its the folks that catch for food, like my Alaskan daughter that fishes and hunts for food - subsistence living - that I respect. Take what you need, nothing more. Oh yea, no taking shorts, make sure there's a future for the species. Had an "discussion" with a guy on the beach the other day taking a 12 in striped bass, way below the lenght limit.

In interest of full disclosure, I may be biased here as surfers and fisherman OFTEN do not get along. JEJE.

Hmmm, I'm not quite sure what to say having absolutely no idea what I am doing while fishing. I think if I caught something I'd like to eat then I'd be quite happy to take it home and eat it, a cod maybe or something I'd eaten from 'Daves chippy', but I probably wouldn't even know a cod from a carp so I'm stumped there.
As far as saving the planets shark population goes, I can't help there as little as I can do much damage to it standing on a reef with a rod, presidente, salami sandwich and Toots and the Maytals playing on my ipod to try and drown out the noise polution from the heaving traffic passing by.
It is amazingly sanctimonious to claim this is the worst thread ever, and by stating this you take away any credibility your post had, as it is just stupid, I've posted far worse threads than this before, :cheeky: and by all counts this is a nice thread about what I'm doing with my time rather than pi$$ing it up against a wall, seeking education so I know what I can kill and eat or give to friends or need to put back. Unfortunatley the nature of fishing in the sea doesn't give the option of picking what you catch, as far as I know, if this is wrong then please tell me and I'll have a couple of lobster on my next epic adventure.
Your oneman mission to rid the world of shark killers probably would be better vented elsewhere, as far as I know, fisherman don't kill sharks as such, it is the long lines commercial fishing and drag net fishing that kills them. So please, give it a rest, you wittling is boring and annoying, sorry:eek:gre:

Torture?

But the fish seem to enjoy it.

They even wag their tales when you catch them. ;)

Just for the record - how do you suppose a shark grows big without at some point being 2 feet long?

Anastacio-
Toots and the Maytals?
You have just gone up ten notches in my estimation - good stuff!!!

Two thumbs up for Toots and the Maytals!! Good stuff, even without the fishing-rod.

As far as fishing goes, I have a pact with the fish. I don't bother them, and they don't bother me. I prefer mine prepared in a restaurant. Too much work otherwise.

I'm not being self-righteous, just practical.

if you catch them by rod or spear-fishing, and somebody eats them... I do not see the problem...

It's called survival of the fittest...

Net fishing, etc... yesss.. there are points open for discussion...

when can I join you guys for a fishing adventure???

Anastasio, not far down the malecon from Miramar, near the ganaderia feria & Presidente factory, there used to be a meat processing plant. They had a huge drain that emptied into the sea there, sending all the blood [etc.] into the water. The area was always filled with sharks, and capitalenos knew to stay out of the water there. The meat factory is gone now [Presidente took it over to expand], but maybe some of the sharks stayed around their old home????

There's a rumor that the same place was a dumping ground for some of the people who went "missing" during the Trujillo years.

Golo,
First of all I wasn't lured by the "beauty" of this country, I came here to make sure my daughter wasn't going to grow up to be a chopa!!!!
To be honest with you I don't even like this country at all but what the hell I already lived my life and for the love of my daughter I'm here. This country might be something for you but it's not for me!!!
Enough about my frustrations now back to shark fishing.
Every time I catch a shark it's not because I was aiming to catch sharks it's just because they were stupid enough to go after the bait. Fyi I don't even use fishing rods I fish island style just with a line. In addition I eat the fish I don't sell it.
Suggesting that I fish shark to make my rod harder I just laugh :bunny::bunny::bunny:
Reckon your lady is complaining maybe you should get of the viagra and try shark meat;)

I was just lurking in the dangerous waters of DR1 just like I do, only to surface to post something once in a while. I had something else in mind, but when I saw this post I just had to reply to this.
This is a disgusting post. Is not like I am an animal rights defender. But with the situation facing sharks worldwide, the fisherman who posted here should be thrown to the sharks.
I understand that millions of sharks are being killed just to take their fins to satisfy the taste of the one-celled stoned age Japanese, who eat everything including dog manure. They hunt down poor whales like stray dogs, while whales make Dominicans and tourists happy by just being there.
That is why I have never felt sorry for the Americans dropping the bomb there. They should have dropped more. The Japanese are the creators of suicide bombing. They are heartless drones.
So anybody who behaves like this joins their club. Hunting a shark in our waters is even more horrendous. Animals of all makes are treated by Dominicans like roaches. We have about the worst record in the world for the conservation of our fauna. We do not need another predator, specially in a forum where people appear to be on the intellectual and civilized society.
So shame on you! What did you do with the shark? Are you so hungry you have to fish your own? No, what I suspect is that you have a need to take a life. Or was it that you need the fins because Viagra wont do?
I am a sport. But this is one of the most disgusting posts ever. And Frank, you came from Germany lured by by the beauty of our country. I hope you feel the same way.

Interesting stuff. In Sosua there used to be a small slaughter house on top of the hill facing off the far side of Casa Marina Beach. They used to dump the carcasses off the cliff into the water and as in Miramar they had a big shark population, apparently. My diving buddy reckons they have been fished out of the area almost completely now, obviously the slaughterhouse has been shut for a long time, but you never know. If sharks are intelligent enough they may return to feeding grounds in the hope when things dry up elsewhere.

Wow.

This is definitely impressive; not that you caught a shark off the malecon, but that there is still sea life off the coast of Santo Domingo. With all the pollution that is dumped there via the Ozama River and sometimes directly, I would had seriously doubted anything could survive that onslaught.

So, this might not be a big deal for some of you but considering I had only purchased a rod 5 hours before hand and then sat on the Malecon at Miramar and within 35seconds felt myself getting pulled into the water it was quite a buzz.
Anyway, the first couple must have been big as they snapped my line, I grew some sabe and decided to wait until he was tired, pulling in a bit at a time rather than pulling as hard as I could. I got the thing under me, baring in mind I was 20' up on a reef and then he pi$$ed off. I did see him and he was about 2' long greyishy belly and spotty brown on his back. Any idea what he could have been?
I feel I might be slightly addicted to this game as it gave me a good adrenaline kick, but it might have been better to actually catch it so it was in my belly than see it and have pi$$ed the both of us off for nothing.
Anyone any tips on fishing off the miramar for these little (I presume) sharks?
Apart from don't eat coastal sharks around Santo Domingo/

Thanks you for the post.

I don't know where you you guys get your tackle, but there's a shop called Sol Y Mar in Santo Domingo where one can get just about anything needed.

I don't know the facts about what gets dumped but the plastic bottle problem is huge. Sometimes the plastic water carpet reaches out for 15mtrs, nasty to see.

Being a Gulf Florida boy and having spent a LOT of time salt water fishing, I suspect what was caught was a big catfish, maybe one we called a Sea Cat. It can be tan to darkish brown, kinda blotchy with a lightish/greyish belly. They can get to be 3+lbs and 15-18" long.

A Sea Cat is different from a Sail Cat, a Sail being grey.

Looking down from 20' if you really didn't know what you were looking at it ~could~ resemble a small shark.

They are aggressive bottom feeders and are prolific in nasty waters. If presented a nice chunk of fish would really hit the line hard. And they fight like hell...

Here's a pic of a Sea Cat:
