There is, however, a lot of individual caring & kindness: it is normal practice to see bakeries/colmados giving food for example and societal toleration is much better in a society which was accustomed to each village caring for its own mentally ill. However, with the demographic shifts from country to town, I think we are seeing more psychiatrically disturbed people who have no family or reference group nearby and thus become homeless, isolated and alone.

You are right. There was a woman in Sosua a couple of years ago and she went to these small places and got food. I am sure you people that was there then remember her. She was big and did not always have that much clothes on often laying on the street. Then one day the cops took her. Three days later I saw her in the mountains between Puerto Plata and Navarrete. Problem solved I guess.:ermm:
