I do have family here, but i would much prefer to do this in my own. I have saved in total about ?1200, yes i have been wanting to do this since i was about thirteen and i know it isnt a lot, do you know how much that would convert to????. I think going to study would be a great idea but how much will all that cost me i know that PUCMM is a really good uni ??????

1200 pounds is around 80,000 pesos which is not much at all.
How much will be left after you pay for the flight?
You do need to find a job fast and be prepared to live on local wages.
Maybe you should start out staying with your family because I can't imagine what sort of accomodations you will be able to afford.

I would suggest that you try for uni in England. You'll have a much better chance of working and studying than here. and 1500 pounds will not go far here.

So,looking at this kind of harshly, I think you would be best off studying something you like, with a part time job on the side.

Here, things would just be too complicated...

That's not the only sort of discrimination, I'm afraid, & you have a Jamaican Dad so you might be darkish skinned? ?1200 isn't really going to be enough as Chip said, unless you stay with family. Have to admire you for being a gutsy young woman & wanting to do this by yourself, but think of the practicalities. Is there any way you could get unpaid leave from your current UK job and come down for say 3 months (your money will last you that long) to test yourself out here? Then go back to UK & your job, keep working, study also, save, save, save & come back when you're older if that is what the 3 months makes you decide? And while you're here explore all the job opportunities with an eye to the future and learn as much as you can about your Dominican roots. As an aside & none of my business & no need for you to answer here, but are you father & mother still together?

Nathalie: Like any country there are varying sorts of racism. Some clear and some not so clear. NOBODY will disrespect you because of your colour. Unless you dress like a hooker or a goth, I doubt that anybody will pay much attention to you at all, other than normal social behavior.
I mean that if you go for a job, it is possible that the interviewer might start off in Spanish ' assuming' that you, because of your coloring, are Dominican. That can hardly be called racist.

So, if you are the lively type of young lady that you seem to be, take Lambada's advice and see what happens in a couple of months...Take up DrChris' offer and see if you can live out in SPM (a lot cheaper than Sto Dgo, for sure)..

Nathalie...send your r?sum? to the person's email I gave you. If you are serious about coming here, there are a number of good companies that DON'T base their pay on skin color (as funny as SOME people seem to think that is). As I PM'd you, if you live outside of Santo Domingo and Santiago, there are American and European companies that will pay for your English skills and few people competing for those jobs. The one I told you about won't hire you unseen but you've got to take the first step. Once they know you are serious about coming here, you may have some form of pre-arrangement.

However, there are SO many people who have sworn that they are moving here "next month" only to never show up, that many employers are certainly not going to chase you down.
