The Traffic Agency (Digesett) says its agents wrote out 1,522,201 fines, more than double those issued in the pandemic year 2020 that were 614,808. In 2019, the number of fines issued were 1,003,852.

The most common fines were violations of red lights (160,381) and transiting without updated insurance or license permits (116,138). In the case of motorcyclists, 395,468 fines were issued to those not wearing their protective helmets.

Diario Libre says that driving without a seat belt (100,229), speeding (92,496), using mobile while driving (51,606), obstructing traffic (45,511) and parking in prohibited places (42,059) were other frequent reasons for issuing fines.

Most of the fines are for RD$1,000 that can be paid at Banco de Reservas branches.

Diario Libre reports that Attorney General received RD$353,409,486 for 720,193 fines that were paid in 2021.

I had none in 2021, but I have had three in the DR, one for parking too close to a stop sign, even though there were 3 motos between me and the sign, one for park within 15 meters of a corner, and one for an illegal left turn in Santiago.

I'm amazed they wrote so many tickets. I hardly ever see them monitoring traffic lights. I mostly see them stopping motos for helmet and document infractions and giving speeding fines to motorists on the autopistas.

I hope this institution is being audited to track where these funds are going once they are collected.

I checked the City of Santo Domingo regulations some years ago and noticed that parking during the day on avenues such as Av. Gustavo Mejia Ricart in Santo Domingo is not allowed during the day. Why is Digesett allowing so much parking on main avenues and double parking? Or is it that they like to ticket people in person? Where is Digesett when we need them?

Ticket? What ticket ?…..I remember back in 2005, still new to DR …got stopped by policía in a rental car….policía requested to see licence and insurance for the car ….no problemo…..gave it to him …only for us to find that the rental car company had an old photocopied expired insurance certificate in the car …panic time for me …party time for policía …

So there we were ….getting dark …hungry policía and a gringo new to the country…no Spanish…wife at home with the baby….policía said he was impounding the car ….hell no I thought…called the rental company…they were closed …only option was to call our property abogada who spoke with the policía …and all in less than a minute…case solved….“give him 500 pesos and go home” she said …naive me was like “why ? it wasn’t even my fault?” …abogada said “Do you want to argue or do you want to go home to your wife and kid” I chose the latter …..”Welcome to DR “ , I thought…driving home.

And its not as of the traffic is fluid.......

They could make a fortune by towing all those cars AND it would open up an extra lane on both sides

We can either be right or happy.
