In volleyball is versatility more valuable than excelling in one position?

Being a utility player is good, but it usually signals that you aren't the best on the team for any one position. My wife's god daughter who is only 5 ' 6'' can spike over much taller women/girls because she has impressive vertical leap and powerful arms. She is good enough to make regional teams but not good enough for the national team. She however received a volleyball scholarship to a college in Kansas then played at Arkansas State University and is now an assistance coach at a college in Kansas. She was one of those that played all positions.

Be an all-rounder or just pick any one?
As someone who played basketball for many years and spent a lot of time with coaches, teams and different community organizations...
Being an all-round player is equally important and depending on the structure of the team, necessary.
