Everybody praises new public transport projects like trains under construction in Santiago or subways in the capital.
Meantime every day roads crumble, water delivery gets worse and leaks are so numerous they can't be counted. The myth of 24/7 electricity is more elusive.

Now rumor has it the beach renovations in Sosua are out of money. The ridiculous boondoggle of absurd concrete cubicles next to Charamicos and near Playero may likely never be finished.

Meatime across the street from the Charamicos cubicles is a huge scar of excavation which was done just as the beach project got underway. It was allowed to excavate up to the edge of Los Cerros access road. Over time rain eroded the hillside and the storm drain pipe was undermined and it collapsed. Ever wonder why the road there is always over topped with mud?

Well shortly after the storm drain collapsed (still visible in the mud below) the Los Cerros road began eroding and with our recent weeks rains has collapsed and is no longer usable. An access road used by hundreds, including myself and neighbors daily has vanished.

The purpose of this huge excavation is unclear. Some say a strip mall, cheezy condos or a grand parking lot. However even though residents of Los Cerros, with several engineers and people with serious construction backgrounds warned the excavation would cause surrounding damage it continued. Oh yeah it was stopped for a short while because environmental permits were not pulled. But after a brief pause the right government ministers palms were greased and the permit was issued and work resumed.

Will the land owner of the excavation or the contractor who did the excavation take responsibility? Hell no. Will the Sosua Ayudamiento or Mayor Willie get involved. No they all want to bury their heads because the land owner is a wealthy man who owns a lot of land running along the road opposite Sosua Beach.
If you are an investor in the DR just take caution. Nothing ever gets repaired properly and none of the agencies really cares. Your neighborhood will eventually be affected by this sloppy lack of oversight and responsibility.

You wrote that the road was collapsing at least a year ago and authorities are only responding now. They'd rather cover their eyes and hope the problem goes away. The problem is now very serious.

Dominicans are like Alfred E. Newman with their hands outstretched and their palms upturned "What Me Worry" ?
The road will never be fixed.

Fortunately for me I bet the right the horse and consider myself quite blessed to have done so but for anyone who chooses to call the North Coast "home" I agree with you 100%.

I knew the fella who ran the water pump station at the bottom of your neighborhood before he passed away. I knew him for many years and spent many a afternoon chatting with him about the lack of attention being paid to Sosua's infrastructure. Were talking 2012, 2013, 2014. Over a decade ago and it sounds like everything up there is getting worse for you guys as the town's population continues to grow... along with the higher cost of living.

You ever thought about moving to a different part of the country?

Yes but right now i have decided I will most likely be returning to the US.
As soon as I can arrange the safe passage of my dogs I will make plans to go.
Love the weather in DR but I can see the future is not bright for Sosua. I do like the Rio San Juan area but its too far from services and shopping so I'll just settle in a mid-sized US town and spend my last 10-12 years there where healthcare is a tad more professional

Can't fault the logic. While the DR is nice to visit and live for a time, when one gets old, there is no time left for dealing with the BS that happens on a daily basis.

On a separate note, I am effing pissed about the whole hillside/access road debacle. Serves no one and add the unfinished fugly concrete plazas to it and destroying the casitas (and even shooting someone during the process) and it makes no bloody sense.
