I haven't really spent any time on the north coast, but it appears that most of the Spanish immersion/intensive language schools are in Sosua or Cabarete.

Does anyone have any experience with or recommendations for any of these schools? Also, Sosua doesn't have the greatest reputation, but is it generally safe for a female in her thirties? I really enjoy the laid back vibe in Las Terreanas, so I'm looking to find something similar while getting my Spanish up to speed.

Thanks so much for your help.

You can have at look at

Instituto Intercultural del Caribe (IIC) - Sosúa

web site. Its a spanish school run by Germans. ( they speak english) Its close to the beach and everything in Sosua proper. You can stay at the School and its very safe. Classes are relax.(Classes in morning and free time in the afternoon. I went there when I first arrived in DR to brush up on my spanish. (some years ago) and had a good time and learned Spanish at the same time.

Google the web site they may have Specials during Pandemic if open.

Thanks for this--it is one of my front runners. I visited their school in the capital, but would prefer to be close to the beach. I just haven't been to Sosua...and reading some of the news and reports from there makes me wonder whether I will feel safe for a month.

I took some Spanish lessons at the Cabarete Language Institute.

It looks like they’re still active.

This is exactly the type of question that DR1 helped me with years ago, and I hope the same for you. Best of luck 🍀.

Thanks for this--they are currently only running private classes, so we'll see if they reopen for group classes in the next few months. Did you end being in Cabarete?

No I did not. Although I prefer the north coast to the south and if I ever did settle in on Hispaniola, it would be Cabarete or Samana. They are my two favourite places on the island.

Keep your wits about you - a decent knowledge of Spanish helps quite a bit with that.

Or anywhere on the island in addition to Cabarete/Sosua. I got a request from a friend who'd like to look at the possibilities down here. Has anyone lately had experience with any schools they thought were worthwhile? Thanks. Farmer

Its reputation doesn't have much to do with safety. If you just use some plain, common sense, you'll be fine.

I ended up spending some time at that one. Instruction was good if you were in the group classes (I think there were 3-5 students in the ones I was in), and I learned a fair amount quickly. Near the end of my time there, enrollment dwindled and I ended up in one-on-one classes which I did not find particularly useful. I also did not appreciate the amount of attention received from the male teacher with the one-on-one classes, and found myself having to politely decline his advances on multiple occasions.

There are so many extremely good one-to-one online courses with extremely good teachers. Laptop and high speed internet and you are good to go, babbel.com, lingoda.com etc etc You get your Private Teacher for 30% of private classes. And if you do not like your teacher, just switch to another.

Do not get involved with anyone or anything when in Sosua that you wouldn't get involved with back home.. and you'll be just fine. Don't flash wealth and do not invite people into your home prior to being invited/ spending time in their home first.
Relax, enjoy, stay safe.
