INTRANT's regulations state that a foreign license is valid for 90 days after entering the DR. How does a simple translation of your license (with a validity of one year) legally extend your license to a full year?

Answer: It does not.

The translation might be vaild for one year etc., but that is where it ends.

And the IDP does not supercede the laws of the DR, because it is nothing more than a translation.

So if people feel the need...........go right ahead and buy one.

While the IDP is accepted in the DR..................it is NOT required.............nor necessary.

That reminds me of DR Birth Certificates that used to "expire".

You can get one for multiple years. You just pay more. I friend of mine has one good for 10 years. He needs it to rent cars in Europe.

Enjoy your frozen drink ..most cops here don’t know local rules let alone international..doesn’t matter what matter is what courts and insurance cares about. Most expat deal or know with insurance company below from Sosua and trust them.. do as you wish it your choice.

You should maybe consider changing insurance company when they actually state something that isn't true. "The Art. 30 explain that a foreign license is valid for 3 month (international license 6 month)." There is nothing in the Law 241 art 30 that speaks about international licenses. It just plain and simply says that you can drive with a foreign license for 90 days (so not even 3 months, as 3 months is either 91 or 92 days).
However for those of you who are interested, you actually don't have to have a cedula to get a DR drivers license. The art 30 explains the following: "b) Toda persona que poseyere una Licencia de Conductor de las señaladas en el inciso anterior, podrá solicitar y obtener una Licencia de Conducir, sin cumplir otro requisito que el pago de los derechos correspondientes, presentando una certificación del representante diplomático o consular del país de donde procede dicha Licencia, acreditado en la República Dominicana, certificando que la referida Licencia es válida, y un certificado médico expedido según se dispone en el inciso a) del artículo 32."
So if you have a foreign license, you can get a DR license just by getting it certified at your country's embassy and then pay the fees and so.

Windy you and me argued for a few yrs you were stead fast license only valid 30 days when I was saying 90 on regular lic..exactly is legal translation with participation countries..and yes in US you can get it out of Cracker Jack box loosely controled and lose as a Sosua flip flop walker..not same in rest of world more controlled where and who can do it..

I wonder out of say 500,000 expats living and driving here without a dominican drivers licence how many cases did not the insurer cover them? Ever heard of even one say in the past 20 years?

My guess is that, on smaller claims, the insurance companies don't even bother to look into whether or not the driver was legal. Any really big claims that might have been denied because the driver wasn't legal are probably so few that the odds of hearing about it are very small.

You need to understand that these companies insure a lot of gringos like this. And all of them take Full Insurance at 20 or more times the price of Ley Insurance. If word gets out that you cannot collect they will lose a ton of business. I have been here for 3 decades and know of many people that had major accidents and collected what they were supposed to get. And have NO knowledge of anyone that was stiffed by any insurance company in the DR...................

Getting "stiffed" means not getting paid for a a claim when you're entitled to it. All insurance companies will look for exemptions when faced with a large claim. I don't see why Dominican insurance companies would be any different.
