The National Transport and Transit Institute (Intrant) has begun to carry out aleatory doping and alcoholic level tests to public transport drivers. The director of Intrant, Milton Morrison, says that the authorities will retain the licenses of those who test positive. Morrison says the intention is to extend the tests to motorcyclists and other vehicle drivers.
Transport syndicate owner, senator for Santiago Rodriguez province, Antonio Marte, has said that if drivers were tested, several public transport routes would have to be discontinued.
The measure comes as the population protests the epidemic of traffic accidents as a result of the lack of effective measures and consequences for traffic law violations on behalf of the authorities.
