The National Institute of Transit and Land Transportation (Intrant) ordered administrative penalties equivalent to 20 minimum salaries be levied on three private transportation companies involved in accidents in Bavaro, La Altagracia province.

The bus companies are penalized for failing to comply with regulations established by Transport and Transit Law 63-17.

After serious accidents occurred, an investigation revealed the companies contracted by resort hotels to transport their staff were providing the services without the corresponding operating licenses. The Intrant said the bus drivers did not have the category 4 license required to drive buses.

The review of the bus company accreditations after the accident also showed that the drivers had yet to register with Intrant to offer passenger bus services.

Hugo Beras, director of Intrant, reiterated a call to the operators of...

Of course, the names of the companies are omitted. The public should know the names. The risky way buses are driven, many of them with obvious lack of maintenance, is an indicator of the uncontrolled road chaos that threatens us all. We should not be at risk from professional drivers and their employment companies. Theirs... and the driving public's poor road behavior has to change for the better. However, the government lacks the will to force them to clean it up. The accidents, deaths, and injuries will continue. The DR will continue to maintain its horrible world high position in road deaths. Drive carefully, the life you save may be your own.

I cannot imagine whey INTRANT would care if they had the correct license.

Well, I can imagine it, I just didn't expect it.

Yes, maybe at other various times. Yet, not this time in this outlet. Often, what is published mentions "yellow buses" or worker transport buses. The publications will declare the names of hospitals, doctors, patients, and patient's hometowns, then will include time and place of accident.

A search of the Listin, El Nacional, SIN, elCaribe and Hoy resulted in no transport company names for the accident having 9 deaths.

The real breach of this tragedy had nothing to do whether or not names are published. It has to do with the breach of public trust by the transport companies, lack of oversight by those who hire them, and government's continued absence of law enforcement. It has to do with a breach of trust resulting in the loss of nine lives.

My first thought was, if this has happened before, why is the local police force not on top of it, properly policing these buses as they use the public roadways? Could it be that anything to do with the resorts get a pass?

It actually happened twice in two days.

The second accident did not have any casualties.

Unfortunately, this is an all-too-common issue in the DR, and unfortunately in that area.

The word that covers it all is "apathy".
