AZB,

The M88 is out already. Have you order it yet? It's around $ 250 on ebay.

TheHun

I know its out. i am just waiting on people to use it and see if it has any major defects. let the people try it out for a couple of months. Then I will take the plunge.

I dont have any information related to the iphone in the DR specifically but I do see some information about the status of what the iphone is capable of and its unlockable etc properties which are incorrect.

The iphone 3g is only unlockable currently using a ghost sim card and only for firmware below 2.2. Firmware 2.2 disables the previous versions of ghost sim cards. I am being told new versions are being shipped now of the ghost card but I have not heard of people using them yet so you need to be careful if you buy your ghost sim unlock card separately from the iphone itself.

There will soon be a software unlock but people with an iphone 3g wanting to unlock it should not upgrade to 2.2 firmware yet(only exception is by usage of a modified ipsw file using pwnagetool. if you don't know what that is you probably should not upgrade). The reason being the 2.2 upgrade will also change your baseband version in the radio which could prevent an unlock.

The older model iphones don't have any problem being unlocked via software making them a more viable option if your looking for an unlocked iphone.

I also saw mention of there being no video recorder available on the iphone. This is untrue. You must jailbreak your iphone to be able to install non app store software but there are 2 versions available for all jailbroken iphones. One is iphonevideorecorder and the other is Cycorder. I prefer Cycorder as its free!

There is also a 3rd part MMS application called SwirlyMMS which does work for Orange in the DR. This application costs $8 and you own it.

The one major drawback I still see with the iphone is its lack of support for macromedia flash on webpages. There are rumors its being worked on and I hope so because it does prevent you from viewing those flash enabled websites.

Hope this helps clear a few things up.

i wanted to buy an iPhone a few months back when i was in Canada but could not without a 2-year contract, so i went on-line and bought a HiPhone. yes, the Chinese version of iPhone. it looks exactly the same as iPhone, only without the Apple logo on the back, and has all the features less the internet. cost me about $170. so far no problems.

They sell the HiPhone hear for RD$6,500, I played with it, doesn't compare.
Plus you have no access to the app store, iTunes, syncing with your Apple etc etc etc. All the stuff that makes the iPhone stand out.

It looks the same, that's it.

yeah but the new M88 phone is a brand new model. It has all what iphone has and more. I agree, the older iphone clones were not up to the standards.

A lot of the clones I have seen are definitely different features wise. Some allow for 2 SIM cards which can be used simultaneously or separately which is interesting. The expansion slot and higher resolution camera is also a nice feature.

What I found typically lacking is not having wifi capability so you have no email or internet usage and the operating system is not compatable the app store or 3rd party community applications.

I have not seen any information on the M88 yet.

Do you think that previously purchased 3Gs will work on their network with a simple SIM replacement? Or perhaps they will able to open it ? I have a 3G collecting dust now cause I did not want to f^%k it up with a ghost sim.

If your phone is not unlocked and you don't want to use the ghost SIM i HIGHLY SUGGEST you WAIT for a software unlock. I would not allow someone to open your phone if it works and doesn't need a battery replacement or some other repair to make it work again.

Collecting dust at least it can be used or sold in the future. If it gets openned and doesn't work at all anymore the best you can hope for is to sell it for parts or pay a tidy sum to get it repaired.

The HiPhone that i have has 2 SIM slots wich can be used at the same time, the pic quality is great, movie quality is not so good, plays music and also FM radio, you can write text messages with your finger on the screen and it recognizes the letters... search on youtube for "HiPhone i9" and you'll see how it looks.

I do not read spanish good but it appears to me the price of the phone is based on the plan one signs up for with the 2 year contract.
The Cheapest plan for 24 months is RD1,350(and is called Plan 1) and the plan two expects one to py RD$1,800(or close to that figure) and it goes up to the 'Ultimate" Plan you are paying RD$3,100(or close to that figure)
with the price of the phone starting at RD$11,700(close price) for a basic 8 gig on upwards.

Beads,

Thanks for the info. I've been waiting for few months now. I have an other iPhone, an older 2G that I can use, so I'm in no hurry.
Based on your experience is there a reliable piggyback / ghost sim that would work OK??
If it was your 3G, what would you do? Would you try a piggyback sim or just wait? It still has the 2.1 software in it.
If you would go with the sim unlock, which sim do you recommend?
Thanks!!

Please, a little help for the uninitiated :)

Perhaps those of you "in the know" could offer some alternative cool phones to the iphone...in a new thread if appropriate. I'm considering one here in Canada but am not quite sold so some viable options and comparisons would be appreciated.

Also a thread on the how to get your iphone unlocked, jailbroken, etc...but in detail and with the technical terms explained so even I can understand would be a real benefit. The terms and possible options and requirements are mind boggling :D:bunny::bunny:

Thanks for your help!

Regardless of the phone I end up buying 1 main criteria is that it can be unlocked for use in the DR so it must also be compatible and preferably GSM....I think :cheeky::bunny::bunny:

Ufff, I am sick and tired of claro. Do not get claro service and even less, their iphone. calls get dropped off, cut off and often times, can't make an out going call. If you get iphone with 2 yr contract, you will be stuck. You will be lucky if you won't break you 1phone in pieces after a short use.

Other than being able to use the 3G network is there any other reason to buy a 3G iphone over a 2G?

I can easily get an unlocked 2G but what to know what else I might be missing out on...if anything.

Thanks

Agree !
I think both provider Claro-Orange has problems in different areas.
The thing is that Orange cost somewhat less. Just compare their prices on the iPhone package. Even when the price is the same you will get more from Orange.
I made a mistake by thinking if I pay more to Claro I'll have a more reliable service - man, I was wrong!
I had contract with Orange, but in my house I barely have any signal, so I got an other contract also from Claro , now I have better signal with a $hit quality service.
The funny thing is I can put my phone on my desk and watch how the signal varies between 2-5 bars.
I think you can't get a good, reliable service in the DR -and I'm not talking only about phone service - you have to try to choose from the lesser crap.
For some reason it reminds me of the latest US election :D
