It Is Most Likely The "Toilet Paper" In The DR!!!!!!

Dominican "Toilet Paper" is VERY poor quality! When the "Kitchen Workers" use the bathroom, the toilet paper breaks down and they get lots of "Fecal Matter" on their hands! Since I have never seen a Dominican come out of the "Stall" and actually wash their hands,I presume that when they prepare your food,or set your table,"You-Know-What",gets onto, and into, your mouth!
You are not used to the local bacteria, aaand you get a case of "The Runs"!
Real problem is that "Giardia" is endemic in the Dominican population, and you really don't want to take that home !!!!

LOL Criss, that explains a lot...

Ive been living here about 9 yrs and still cant eat out. Doesnt matter if its fried food, pizza, KFC, restaurants, it all gets me sick. Starts with dull intestinal pains and diarrhea and lasts almost a week.

I can only eat whats cooked at home. Have never had a problem with anything made at home. There are some major hygiene issues with food handlers in this country.

A few things to think about ....

First of all - You must NEVER give imodium to a child that is under 12. Let's get that one straight from the start. If they are dehydrated use childrens electrolyte from the chemist, or if it's not available I'm told Gatorade is better than nothing.

Secondly, ice and water are ok here - maybe vegetables are to be avoided if you come down for a week or two unless you see them washed in clean water - not necessarily tap water.

The big passer-on of disease and germs are flies and 'roaches. When you sit at a table our little 'roachy friends were probably partying on it all night leaving their sh*t and God knows what else behind them.

But for me the one obvious thing is the flies. We don't have many of these nasty little disease spreader's over here but pop a straw in a glass or bottle and they arrive from nowhere and land straight on the end of it. I've seen it countless times before - straight off the dog poo / dead rat / festering rubbish sack and straight into your mouth. - Try it yourselves just pop a straw in a glass, sit back and wait two minutes. YUCK!!!!

My advice to holidaying folk is to bring those small bottles of hand sanitiser - enough for each member of the family, and use it at every meal time. It's always worked for my family.

And by the way; I eat from the street, and I eat whatever I fancy. About a month ago I went back to Scotland for a holiday and I've never been so ill from food poisoning in all my life. I guess it's also got a lot to do with what you're used to and what you get exposed to in small amounts every day of your life.

Oh - One other thing - would someone be so kind to inform us of the proper spelling of "die-oh-rear" :ermm:
