electricians and mechanics are tied for destroying stuff in this country for me. Had an Electrician lay cheap wire that he had a roll off of Ali Express - next the improper guage wire was used, duck tape on everything just to confuse you. What happens when you use improper guage wire you may ask? well it gets hot and melts and magic smoke happens, the previous dueno of the truck decided he was an electrician too he grounded the truck beautifully with some aluminum material smokey smokey, head gasket surprise from using water for the whole engines life and not changing the oil, I had to get the engine built for 100k peso.

Jumped fuses as well got muy caliente.. Beautiful Honda CBR, someone used improper guage wire for the hot wire on the fuel pump guess what smokey smokey almost went to heaven if that was under the right preconditions to spark. In short and im sorry for the awesome ones that do exist here, 95% are horrible beyond belief and will cost you more damage than getting in professionally done in US/Canada. YouTube is your friend. If you want something done to your standards in DR you gotta pay or you have to be confident in learning new skills or you're a ticking time-bomb of a victim.

I actually know a great diesel mechanic in Puerto plata has the proper tools and knowledge if anyone is interested reach out please.. i don't recommend people too often or services, but I know him through family. But yes.. good mechanics there are a handful on the island in all seriousness I've yet to find an electrician that I have confidence in; not to be a hard a** I just have high standards for electrical systems because I have worked on projects where we created complicated boards to control biotech applications in Canada.

In the past few years I've definitely noticed an uptick in Dominicans wearing helmets. Just because change is slow, doesn't mean it isn't happening.
Yeah batting helmets, shells with no liners, nothing that is DOT approved and never ever buckled

There is a guy named Larry in Sosua that is a licensed U.S. electrician living and working in Sosua,he is top notch. He does a lot of work on the north coast if anyone wants his business contact info I can try to dig it up. I and several friends have used him,he is a good guy but very busy as can be expected as these guys are rarer than hens teeth on the north coast and yes,he uses wire nuts.

I've never seen an electrician with wire nuts or even know what they are.
They come in the package when you buy lamps or ceiling fans etc... But in DR they thought them away 😕

My uncle was an electrician and I remember him using wire nuts over 60 years ago, so they've been around for while now!

I haven't found a ferreteria that knows what they are either. I get a blank, puzzled look when I ask for them. I finally bought my own from eBay. They're dirt cheap.

Before I live in the US never used them either, concerning to wires and cables are totally different and the nuts are intended to be used in a specific application. Most DR wiring are different than US that's is the mean reason people doesn't uses wire nuts in DR.

Well wire Nuts are not really something desirable either.

What do you mean DR wiring is different. I'd rather see wire nuts in a connection box than twisted wire and cheap Chinese tape that falls off in the heat

They sell the little screw type connectors here but they are only for smaller wire.
Just put in a new pool light and I used wire nuts then squished in butyl and then wrapped in tape. No water can enter

Most constructions in DR have cables, it's difficult to use wires nuts on a 14-12- gauge cable joints. You can attach a 16 mm wire easy to a low gauge cable but when the cable is bigger then the wire nut may not work.

Cable nuts come in various sizes. They can be used on almost all electrical wires in most homes. They shouldn't be used on wires that are made of fine strands as they will not hold together well. Also you should be careful and make sure the wire nuts are not made with an aluminum core as they should not be used on copper wire.
I always use them and wrap them in tape just to make sure they stay on.

An ednorte guy was doing work on my service entrance and took them off. When I asked why he says they are no good in this country. I told him to take them out of his pocket and put them back on the connections as they were.
