Just a heads up! I had my camera, some jewlery and my prescription sunglasses stolen a couple of weeks ago on a POP to Miami flight. The items were in a checked bag. Got a quick lesson that checked does not necessarily mean "secure". Now I have to go through the long claim process with American Airlines. Just an FYI not a blame game for either end. Anyone can steal stuff.

JuliaB,
Welcome to DR1. Sorry to hear that you had merchandise stolen but as you said it's a lesson learned.

What is the possibility we could get you to post a report in the "Trip Report Forum" concerning your trip to our island? We sure would like to hear how everything went. Little things like where you stayed, what you did and how the service and food was. Hope you come visit us again.

From my experience picking guests up at the POP airport, I can truly say that AA flight 979 from Miami is victimized with baggage theft, more than all the others combined.
Something funny is going on, but I don't know where.

I know that at STI the baggage is handled by private contractors, so I would suspect that it's the same scenario at POP, and that those people are to blame. The bags can easily be opened and items removed before they are placed on the carrousel for the passengers. I have heard of similar thefts at SDQ.

BTW, I make it a habit to place any valuable items such as cameras, sunglasses, etc., in my carry-on luggage regardless of where I'm traveling to/from because such thefts are not limited to DR. Things disappear from people's luggage at many airports. I know for a fact that it happens in the US (JFK, LGA, EWR) too.

Just flew out on AA 979 this past Saturday. We had all of our bags checked twice and our carryon bags three times. Each time it was a two person inspection with one chatting up a storm trying to get our attention while the other checked the bags. We worked it so that my wife chatted with the "gentleman" and I ignored them all and watched the "checker" like a hawk. Never looking away. I am sure that they thought I was less then social, but nothing was missing.
They even made me put my wallet through the screener, and it was in there a long time. My wife tried to look into the screener xray box and was hustled off. I did not move from the area until I had thoughly checked the wallet.
I feel we could have easily been a victim this time. Keep your eyes open and your ears closed.

For less than 10 bucks.......

....you can get the FAA approved locks which allows you to have a locked bag AND lets you know if your bag was inspected or not. They came out a little over a year ago. They are a must have if you are flying.

Those locks won't help stop them from stealing from your luggage. On a recent trip to the DR I was surprised when I picked up my luggage and found they had cut off the TSA lock (along with part of the zipper).

...your amazing bad luck.....

....I fly close to 100,000 miles a year. I have never had your problem. I choose to use the locks. Cheap investment to keep the "honest" honest. You can NEVER stop the others.............

The stealer will always find a way to steal regardless of what is done. When i fly into POP (not much) there is always a commotion around the baggage area. Me personally have never had a problem there but i know of people who have had many.

just an FYI

Wherever your destination, it is NEVER a good idea to put valueable items, keys, medicine, cash, credit cards, etc. in checked baggage. I usually only pack clothing in my checked bag. One time I thought my toiletries would be okay. I was wrong. They were stolen, and now those too go in my hand luggage.

I have worked in an airline baggage service office. I can't tell you how many times bags are mishandled, pilfered, lost, and stolen. And that is bags to and from everywhere......

Our last two trips down - one with Delta and one with AA, both suffered 'shortages' when received (SDQ via New York/MIA). Interesting to note that the bags that were 'delayed' were untouched while those that arrived on the same flight as we did were 'short'........???

This is why everywhere I travel I carry one carryon and backpack to hold enough clothing for less than a week.

The times that I've checked baggage I have lost a cologne and a few shirts were missing. The worst experience I've had was when I travel to Tokyo for 4 days and I checked a bag which I could've carried, but didn't !

They lost it in transit (at Dallas) and didn't get my luggage till the following day of my arrival and at about 11pm. The only compensation I got was 100 to spend on clothing/toiletries, which doesn't amount to much in Tokyo :D
