Okay...let me clarify...IN MY OPINION...that way I can't be wrong...:)

San Juan was dirty, crowded, over priced and unsafe....that about sums it up.

Of all the islands that I've visited, Puerto Rico was my LEAST favorite...sorry.

I agree that San Juan has its downs but there is more to PR than just San Juan.

You need to visit Ponce, Isabella, Cabo Rojo and other cities.

Sorry you did not enjoy yourself.

On another note, I do enjoy DR more than I do PR for vacations.

PR has a special place in my heart because my roots come from there.;)

Yup...even my Puerto Rican friends like the DR over Puerto Rico. Oh well, just another reason to visit the DR. I just couldn't believe the Yahoo rankings of the "best cities in the Caribbean" listed San Juan as number 1.

Did you get mugged? How well do you speak spanish?

Did you have a clue as to where you were going? Were you expecting San Juan to be just like South Beach in Miami?

Having travelled a bit, I can say the same things about the capital of almost ANY central/south american country with a few exceptions-Buenos Aires comes to mind.

But once the initial "gringo shock" wears off, you will notice people going about their daily lives and the place begins to open up to you.

I will argue your perception and question your definite lack of tact. You seem extremely ill-suited for anything the DR has to throw at you if you didn't like San Juan. How much dirtier and dangerous is San Juan compared to Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata? It would all depend on where you went and what you expected.

And all this is besides the fact that you have insulted the motherland of some of our DR1 members.

VERY TRUE!!!!

Ex. Just came back from Costa Rica.

Beautiful, awesome experience BUT San Jose was for the birds. (I still managed to have a good time though in San Jose)

Relax...I'm not trying to insult anyone, but I've been to many of the cities listed in that survey and I was shocked to see San Juan as number one. I have many Puerto Rican friends that agree with me. Try not to take it personal.

I was being as objective as possible, but read what bronxboyatheart wrote.

I myself have been to Costa Rica and would NEVER recommend San Jose to anyone. But I did not let the fact that I didn't like the capital put me off the beauty of the country in general.

Show me a place as or more disgusting as some parts of Puerto Plata. Even La Vega, if you go down the wrong street looks like a huge dumpster. But then you make a few more turns and all is well.

And just because you have a few puerto rican friends that agree with you doesn't mean that you or they are right.

Besides, Puerto Rico has a lot of AI traffic and is considered safer than Jamaica and even the DR-but thats' travel agent propaganda, not the reality-just like your opinion.

no fighting please .. everyone has different views on different places. I saw a program once on "The Top 10 Beaches" .... (are you ready for a good laugh)..... they said Miami Beach was in the top 3.... they obviously have not been to DR, Cuba and other caribbean islands.

After thinking about it here are my thoughts...the Cities were posted by a travel agent...probably ranked the "Best Cities of the Caribbean" base in vacancies they had in the upcoming month. Probably not an objective view at all...although I wouldn't mind hearing from others as to their personal list of "Best Cities of the Caribbean."

wow, i've been to san jose (i loved it !!) and i've also been to san juan (other than the reasons stated there is virtually no real nightlife except old san juan and the places you might get killed). i did spend time in mayaguez in the west and ponce to the south. they were the most enjoyable to me.
i use to spend some days down on the shore in mayaguez watching the coast guard arresting dominicans

I'll admit the nightlife sucks in San Juan-a bunch of wanna-be pretty boys trying to talk to the same 2 or 3 stuck-up girls. But in the DR, es MUY diferente...HAHAHA!!!!!!

Yeah...that's probably why everyone I've ever know from PR wants to vacation in the DR, I think you nailed it...:)

Kat,
it's very obvious they've never been to any other beach than Miami beach, lol.
i've been there on nthe south shore area many times but also many years back, so not up to date, by that time not bad for a weekend's nightlife, but for sure it hasn't been a spot to visit for it's 'beautiful' beach.
