Jamaica doesn’t want Haitians

This Saturday’s Listín Diario has an article about the Jamaican government making it clear it doesn’t want Haitians. They are worried of an avalanche of Haitians to their island and will only accept as refugees a few such as children from one orphanage and members of the World Bank. The Jamaican Minister of National Security, Horace Change, told the Jamaican Parliament it has to do whatever it can to prevent a Haitian avalanche into Jamaica.

My guess is that Jamaica will be deporting back to Haiti every Haitian that reaches their soil on his or her own.

I don't see why they couldn't do what the USA does, and allow for sponsors.
Jamaica's violence is so high that it displays characteristics of civil war.

Calculations for the period 2000-2015 from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) data and countries' crime figures show that Jamaica has been the fourth most violent country in the world since the new millennium.

(1) Jamaica has a well-documented history of violence, which encourages political factions. (2) Jamaica's segmentary factional politics which surfaced in the 1970s resulted (3) a weak central political authority, and hence perpetual problems in governance.

Jamaica in Addition is a poor country.
People struggling to make a living.

Even Bob Marley was not safe in his own country.

Guess a step up for Haitians........

It’s a bit tricky what I am going to say but why not sponsor African
countries to accept a large amount of them.

Many Jamaicans immigrated to Canada years ago. Toronto has a very large Jamaican community, a smaller Dominican community, and Haitian community. Montreal with it‘s large Haitian community would be the only hope for Haitians hoping to immigrate to find sponsors. The Quebec government has put a hold on immigrants because of a lack of funding and housing so thats not an option. Many African countries are in turmoil because of civil wars, lack of financial resources and internal migrations due to changing climate. I don’t think they would accept large groups of very poor Haitians.

I remember when the 2010 earthquake took place in Port-au-Prince. The president of Senegal made it very easy for Haitians to go there and hardly anyone went. Now, a typical Haitian might get more out of Jamaica than Senegal considering Jamaica is considerably wealthier than both of them. Jamaica is also very close to Haiti while Senegal is on the other side of the world.

Jamaica is also one of the most visited countries in the Caribbean with a very robust tourism industry while I don’t think Senegal is a major touristic place. I don’t know what’s the security situation in Senegsl, but in Jamaica it’s the greatest issue in some of the slums of Kingston. That’s a major reason Jamaica is able to have a robust tourism industry, since much of the violence doesn’t happen in the tourists areas. They also don’t suffer from other things such as airplanes being shot and flights cancelled to any of Jamaica’s airport due to security concerns.

The car park in Jamaica certainly looks newer and shinier than in Haiti. You will not see as many lucury vehicles roaming around Kingston as you see in Santo Domingo.

I also think the infraestructure might be better in Jamaica than in Senegal (even better than Haiti.) There is a nice controlled highway system in Jamaica. Nothing like that exist in Haiti and I don’t think in Senegal either, at least not crisscrossing the country. When it comes to all aspects of infrastructure, I think Jamaica is ahead of both of them. The airports in Jamaica are nothing like the ones in Haiti, don’t know about Senegal. Many Jamaicans have travelled for actual tourism in the DR because the country has a larger percentage of its population in the middle class than Haiti or Senegal. Electricity coverage is more extensive in Jamaica than in Haiti and Senegal, and electrical service even surpasses the DR where power blackouts aren’t as common. The same with the overhead wires, they certainly look more organized that what is many times seen even in the DR. Kingston as a city for the most part doesn’t look like Port-au-Prince and Montego Bay doesn’t look like Cap Haitian (I’m not even refering the center area of Cap Haitian.)

Diseases such as malaria doesn’t exist in Jamaica since the government there eliminated it many decades aho while it’s widespread in Haiti and Senegal, plus still exist in spots in the DR. I also think Senegal has many other diseases don’t exist even in Haiti. That brings to light the quality of the healthcare. It must still be deficient in Jamaica, but thry do have a higher life expectancy than Haiti. All Jamaican pregnant women give birth in a hospital and they get periodic medical check ups during the pregnancy. Infant mortality and the death rate if women giving birth doesn’t compare with what Haiti has.

Jamaican education may also be deficient, but I think on average the typical Jamaican is better educated than the typical Haitian. Jamaica is a major source of nurses to the UK, something Haiti isn’t to anywhere despite Haiti does have a severe brain drain problem. Jamaica too, but it might be slightly better than Haiti but considerably worst than the DR. Well over 50% of Jamaicans with university degrees eventually leave Jamaica while the DR is arount 30-35%. In Haiti is well over 80%, so practically every Haitian you know is a professional will likely leave Haiti at a certain point.

From an environmental point of view, all I got to say is that you go to Jamaica and their mountains have a good amount of forest cover. Don’t need to say anything about Haiti since everyone know what’s the issue there with most of its mountains which a few decades ago covered in forest. The DR and Cuba are the only countries in the Caribbean where forest cover has been increasing in the last decade or 2. Jamaica isn’t there, but so ething telks me they have less of a deforestation problem that Haiti. Jamaican rivers aren’t drying.

Jamaica does comes through as a better place to live than Haiti does. Even their litter situation is better than in many areas of the DR, so it goes without saying it’s cleaner than Haiti. You don’t hear of gasoline shortages, their supermarkets are better sorted and less expensive than the few found in Port-au-Prince. Etc, etc, etc.

Quite frankly, if Haiti was more like Jamaica including its problems, it would had been better than what Haiti has become.

I don’t think Jamaica is that bad. I think more like the DR actually. It’s not as big so not as diverse an economy.

Not if you are in an AI tourist resort.
A far cry from being Jamaican living and surviving there.
Watch a Bob Marley documentary to get a sense of life there.
Or better yet spend time off reservation.

Guess they are just kidding, saring the frady cats.

But don’t they also advise against travel to the DR. But I don’t know Jamaica that well. Many though would say the same about the DR.

Everybody knows that and if in general Haitians knew how much better life would be for them in Jamaica than in Haiti, then it’s obvious more would go there too.

I have read Chile has a very big Haitian community. At this point they are probably better off anywhere but Haiti.

Why should Canadian taxpayers pay the bill for Jamaicans or Haitians.
Many Quebecois don't like them.

Study organized Crime in Montreal and NY, In regard to Jamaicans and Haitians.
Just because the socialist Trudeau government want's to look good , it's not reason enough.
Study the history of Michaëlle Jean Governor General from Haiti.
What a costly farce to look liberal, to have a Haitian as the Queen's representative at that time.
Yes Canada is liberal and loves everyone, sadly it is not loved back by many immigrants living in parallel societies.

Vancouver apartment rentals are about 2,500-3,000 a month.
A detached house starts around 2,000,000
Townhouse around 1,000,000
Apartments 650-750 K

Toronto is not much behind.

Vancouver has the highest cost of living and a low wage environment, unless working for gov.ca or having a high education.
Add to this a severe housing shortage and homeless people in the streets and drug addicts because of decrimilazation.

Average Canadians are struggling to survive
And to start families.
One has to earn at least 160,000 as a family a year to have a hope to get into the housing market at the bottom end and to have a 20% down payment.

I would re-think Canada's refugee policy and focus on people the country needs selected by education.
I would also re- think foreign aid and allocate funds to national defence, which is just as non existent as that of the EU.

Just as Jamaica and Africa don't want Haitian refugees, other countries are re-thinking their refugee strategies and acceptance.
The EU has the insanity of the right to asylum refugee status, once they are knocking at the door.

Hopefully the DR will be smarter, not much danger of Jamaica admitting large numbers.

Once Haitians arrive in the EU they will be in, the long way and cost prohibits many from arriving.
Choosing instead USA or Canada.

The few democracies left in the world will be unable to solve all the world's problems.

The EU get a lot of immigration too. From Africa, Middle East and Asia. Maybe there is a Haitian community in France because of the history.

Chile was giving Haitians visas a few years back. I think that they stopped that at least 2 years ago.

I know one guy who was in Santiago and trekked up to Mexico and then the US. He's now in Massachusetts.
