If someone wants to open up and operate a business on one of the beaches in the tourism sector renting out jet-skis to tourists does he/she need to have any licence to do so and ,in the affirmative, what authority is in charge to issue such a licence ?
Your early response would be highly appreciated.

Tried it and failed - and I had the help of someone already established. You need to be very well connected or don't even bother trying. :bandit:

Answer

yes, surprisingly perhaps it is regulated, so you will need a tourist licence and a marine licence along with insurance.

I have no idea where you get these, but some friends have just started a wakeboard business on the Yasica and had to comply with these requirements.

Consult an attorney.

Go to see the local chief of police who covers the area in which you are interested in working, he will be able to let you know if you have any chance of infiltrating the area, others already there will be paying him to ensure the likes of you are removed if you 'interfere'. If there is scope for you to work the area then he will tell you. A retainer will ensure you don't get molested by either people wishing to offer protection or the local police, or are they the same thing? LOL... Anyway I simply wish to point out that business is not done in the way us westerners would usually imagine.

Last thing, Jetski's - nice and cheap in Miami, transport to DR not too bad, getting them out of customs without a Kings ransom, forget it. But there are ways round this, but I'd be an idiot to tell you sorry, I'm bound for that direction myself in about 3 years.

Good luck anyway

Paul, which part of the DR coast are you talking about in particular? I think there are big local differences in how corrupt/maffioso the police chiefs are and what areas they are interested in. Is it the Punta Cana area? I have heard a similar story told by a regular visitor there about someone trying to open a new bar or disco in Punta Cana. His competitors already in business made sure he never got delivered a single bottle of beer. None of the suppliers wanted to deal with him and he had no other option but to sell his business at a loss.
