On their website, they say they allow overweight baggage on domestic flights but look what it says for international flights (DR):

-------------------------------
Free Checked Baggage Allowance on International Flights:

JetBlue Airways will transport two bags, per ticketed customer as checked baggage free of charge for international destinations. Bags are not to exceed 62 inches in overall dimensions or 70 pounds per bag.

NO oversize (over 62 inches in overall dimensions) or overweight (over 70 pounds) baggage will be permitted.
NO boxes will be permitted as checked baggage.
-------------------------------

The fact that they say "will not be permitted" means that you will not be able to take overweight luggage with you... Will that solve the delayed luggage issue many dominican airlines have had?

No

........what it means is that people will still show up at the airport with luggage OVER 70 lbs, LARGER than 62" AND in BOXES, and, now, since they DON'T have an option of paying for it, there will be MORE confusion, ARGUING, and LATE departures..........followed by JETBLUE "not being able to handle the Dominican market".

Yeah I thought about the same thing..

I was expecting that response. Obviously, Jetblue has no idea what is coming for them. They are bound to the A320s so they wont have an immediate solution to the problem. They should have considered finding one with more cargo capacity (like AAs infamous A300), when they planned the route, which would keep all the dominican customers happy with the 1000 lb bags. Lets see how it goes... I have a flight with them in july :nervous:.. Maybe I should just pack a carry-on!!

Some of you guys keep thinking that JetBlue is Aeromar or Dominicana de Aviacion or any of the other two bit airlines.
JetBlue is a solid company and one of only two airlines, Southwest being the other, that has remained profitable post 9/11.
The company has a model that it works with and that model works. DR is the first and only international destination that JetBlue flys to. This being the case, I'm sure they didn't just toss a dart at a map and choose this as a destination. I'm sure, being based in JFK, they did their homework and saw the pospects of profitabilty for this route and went ahead.
This airline has done nothing without much calculation and thought, which is why they have become a dominant force in the New York market in such a short time.
Although I am flying down on Delta and have only flown JetBlue once to Florida, I would not discount their success in NY or their reasoning behind choosing this as their first and only international destination.

Based on your past relentless promotion of Aeromar, I think you better go hide in a corner.

To talk about JetBlue and Aeromar in the same breath is just plain stupidity.

Do they have an excellent track record, are they very professional organization, an innovator and industry leader, YES.

Will they survive in the DR? Who knows?

But...

One would have to assume they have done their ground work and have a pretty good idea how this market ticks.

I agree w/ you, NY1

I considered Jetblue must know this before entering the market. BUT, as proud as I am being a dominican I am aware that there are alot of people out there who take tons of luggage to the airport KNOWING it is overweight. They go with three kids and give each of them two bags and a heavy carry on. AA solved this by using the old A300 even when tickets were costing more than a flight in a 777.

I think, though, that the entire Jetblue ticket purchasing process, which requires internet access and/or a credit card and gives no paper ticket, may filter out alot of people and maybe give way to more tourists and established dominicans in the U.S.

VUELO WASHINTON-JFK-INDIA = MUCHASSSS Maletassssss
VUELO WASHINGTON-jfk-LONDON= Poca MALETAS

en conclusion, mientras mas necesidad economica tengan los familiares mas cosas en llevar mas equipaje.

The diference between Delta and JetBlue is big, Delta can change at every moment the B757 service in to an B767 or B777 for more luggage and they have also a second flight if they cannot take it on the first flight.

I think you are going to need to reread the rules on the back of each ticket to see the genius in this plan (ie no refund).

Consider the overbooking capacity with X number of people being booted from the flight. Eventually the Dominicans will simply do as they are told, did not hippo prove it with his term.

I can see the scene at JFK already

Dozens of people screaming about not being able to cajoel their 1000 pound boxes and bags onto the plane. AA has made a science out of charging people for this.

My advice to JetBlue: Have a bilingual staffer call EVERY reserved passenger to remind them that oversized bags will not be allowed for at least the first six months of operation. After that, word will be out.

I agree with the premis that, having decided to serve SDQ, JetBlue, a truly well financed industry leader, will not give up unless the sky falls.

Solutions!

Charters company just alw 20 kilos each pax here in Canada.overweight 5 $ CND each klo.no matter the type of aircraft on the route Canada-DR and let me tell you they make lots of money.

More kilos the airlines permits to bring MORE EXTRA THEY WILL TAKE with them.Y ustedes todos conocen el resto de la historia.

I don't understand here

the baggage allowance is pretty standard

maybe this will teach the people that wanna bring 500 suitcases with them a lesson.

I couple of years ago I was travelling with a carry on and this lady tells me that she cannot believe that I am not taking advantage of the luggage that I am allowed. She mentioned that she wish she knew me from before so that she could have prepared "otra maleta de feferes"

I was like whatever lady

Jetblue may be a blessing in disguise; they may teach the people flying to DR to follow rules.

I just received a reply from Jetblue

I was told by Jetblue that they are strict with the 2 bags per customer rule but will give customers the option to use a pre-flight shipping option (possibly a cargo company) for their extra baggage. I think this is a great idea and it means they had considered the problem in the first place.

Quote:
Thank you for your email regarding baggage to the Dominican Republic and we can understand your
apprehension. JetBlue has issued strict baggage rules and we have listed them below for you.

You may bring two checked bags per person free of charge. Boxes or
additional bags are not accepted on international flights. If you wish to bring additional bags,
you can ask about a pre-flight shipment option.

cmedina07,

The difference between the Jetblue baggage allowance and other airlines is that Jetblue DOES NOT accept any bags that weigh more than 70 lbs and only 2 per customer. Other airlines accept 2 bags (free of charge) and take the extra lbs and bags for an extra charge.

Samana you maybe right, like for guatemala, they dont use 767 everytime they have bag left behind...once in a while they just change the EQuipment.

Luggage is a hard Challenger for all Airlines...eve they know rom previous exprerience from Pan am ( the old PAN AM).
i keep you update on how they doing on bags issued.

well..i checked out the jet blue site today.....advertised at 119 each way...but after taxes and fees comes to about 350.

In regards to the baggage issue....there are quite a few pop ups that come up when you try confirm your flight that really emphasize their baggage policy.

Im sure some people will get pissed off and find this discriminatory.....but they DO offer options for folks with "extra" baggage.

I'm pretty sure tho that they will find a way to make this a solulable business. Im sure there will be enough toursist trade to make it a profitable route. ANd im sure the dominicans here will realize quickly realize the limitations of the airline.....and will probably stay with AA.

As a tourist tho.....i will say...it will definitely be an advantage not having to endure long lines with people in front of me with tons of stuff loaded up. No disrespect to the the folks bringing tons of stuff back home.....but i for one look forward to a fast moving line. (i will miss the applause as the plane lands tho if it is only full of toursits)

well...i HOPE im back in either july or august....at least if only for a long weekend.

That is not true. I flew Continental last summer and they had exactly the same baggage policy as Jet Blue. In addition, AA applies an embargo in the summer and at Christmas - which makes their policy also equivalent to that of Jet Blue.

bingo

the reason CO and Jetblue have to do this is because they don't use the big Airbus plane like AA does.
