You sound like Mr. AE. He was in his glory listening to these, said something to the same effect as you did, except he used Johnny Ventura as an example.

I first thought of Johnny Ventura, but Jose?to and Johnny and Felix del Rosario were doing basically the same type of merengue.

Then came Wilfrido Vargas y Los Beduinos, and they ushered the new era.
